Review of “Time in the Minors”

By Mike Silva ~ December 27th, 2010. Filed under: Mike Silva, Sports Entertainment.

I am a big fan of independent film as I can admire the work, money, and time that is required to create something for broadcast. We have discussed various projects on this site such as Playing for Peanuts, The Joy of Sox, The Emerald Diamond, and Touching the Game: Alaska.

I recently reviewed another great film called “Time in the Minors” by Oh Show Productions.

“Time In The Minors” documents the lives and passionate dreams of two minor league players on their arduous journey to becoming Major League Baseball players. John Drennen (19), a High School All-American from San Diego, California was selected in the first round of the 2005 amateur baseball draft by the Cleveland Indians and offered a one million dollar signing bonus. 2006 will mark John’s first full season in professional baseball. Tony Schrager (28), a 1998 and 6th-round draft pick out of Omaha, Nebraska is an 8-year veteran of the minor leagues. The 2006 season may be Tony’s last shot to make it.

The producer and creator, Tony Okun, joined me on my weekly radio show, which you can download here (fast forward to 30 minute mark).

If you don’t know anything about Drennen or Schrager I suggest you don’t look them up until you watch the film. I think it will add some mystery to the story, and make it more enjoyable. These are two kids battling for the same dream, but at opposite ends of the pro baseball spectrum. I found myself rooting for their success, and agonizing over their failures. I particularly took interest in Schrager because I have covered the Atlantic League and have seen many players in his situation. You learn about the “not so glamorous” part of baseball, outside pressures, how it impacts family, the amount of preparation neccessary to compete, and how difficult it is to walk away from the dream. I think all fans will appreciate the game more if they take a glance into the lives behind the players they watch daily.

I know the holiday’s are over, but if you have a budget for one more gift for a baseball fan purchase Time in the Minors. I enjoyed it, and believe you will as well.
