Rumor Mill: Yanks Have Interest in Grant Balfour

By Frank Russo ~ November 29th, 2010. Filed under: Rumor Mill.

I spoke to my main Yankee source in Tampa that let me know there is interest in Rays free agent reliever Grant Balfour. The one setback with Balfour is he is a Type A free agent and would cost the Yankees a draft pick. Of course, if the Yanks sign Cliff Lee they will lose their first round pick anyway. Balfour has until midnight Tuesday to accept Tampa’s offer of arbitration.

Speaking of Lee, we continue to hear the Yanks have not made an offer, but are willing to go as high, if necessary, as CC Sabathia money. They would prefer to keep the deal no more than five years. Things should heat up in the next week, and I continue to stand by what I have said since last offseason that Lee coming to the Bronx is inevitable.

Mike Silva wrote about some of the “scrapheap pickups” over the weekend. I was told the real “under the radar move” this offseason might be 19 year old Scottie Allen who was acquired from Arizona for Juan Miranda. Allen was drafted in the 11th round in 2009. Baseball America reported average stuff, but said he is a “teenager who has a feel for pitching.” He’s averaged a strikeout per inning his first two MILB seasons. Regardless of how the kid pans out Miranda, despite some love from certain NYBD commentators, was never going to play for the Yankees.

Any news on the Cliff Lee or Jayson Werth fronts involving the Yanks?

Yanks are remaining numb on Werth. I think he will go to either Boston, Anaheim or a sleeper club like Detroit

My guy down in Tampa says that the Yanks are ready to “Break the bank” for Lee. I think they will make an offer to him soon, possibly during the winter meetings. I know they refuse to be outbid for him.

I am assuming they will make a couple of bullpen moves. Would like to see them keep Wood and add either Downs or Fuentes. I also think George Sherrill would be a nice gamble. Guy closed games for Baltimore and made the All-Star team in 2008 at Yankee Stadium. If he can be had for a minor league deal, I’d have to imagine one of Sherrill, Cotts, or Sisco could step it up in ST and stick. Hearing anything regarding Bill Hall?

Yanks like Hall, but I think he wants to start somewhere, which leaves him out of the picture in New York. I know that they want Keey Wood back, and he stated that he loved his time with the Yankees, but he will get closer money from somone. I think Cashman has a few tricks up his sleeve. There are tons of relievers out there, and I think that someone like a Downs would be a perfect fit. It’s somthing we will have to wait and see on.

    Mr. Russo:

Are you hearing Lee signing during the Winter Meetings, along with Mo and hopefully Jeter?

Your guess is as good as mine, but from what I have been told. the Steinbrenner Brothers have given Cashman the OK to put on a full court press for Lee like he did with his buddy Sabathia two years ago at the winter meetings.
