The Yankees and Justin Upton

By Mike Silva ~ November 16th, 2010. Filed under: Mike Silva, New York Yankees, Rumor Mill.

So Justin Upton is available and the Yankees are making inquiries. That shouldn’t be a surprise as this was the vision of Brian Cashman when they made the commitment to developing a top notch farm system after the 2004 collapse. In an offseason where the Yankees might not be able to spend big money to lure a top free agent outfielder, they could use their internal resources to improve the offense. Whether the Yankees are willing to part with what Kevin Towers wants is a whole other story.

Reports indicate the asking price for Upton will be an outfielder, a reliever and a starting pitcher. The Yankees have those pieces to spare as they could offer Brett Gardner, Joba Chamberlain, and a pitcher of the Ivan Nova, Hector Noesi, or Andrew Brackman ilk.

Upton is entering the second year of a 6 year/$51.25 million dollar deal. Although he regressed a bit offensively in 2010, he still is a player that posses speed, power, and the ability to get on base. He is exactly the type of offensive player the Yankees look to acquire. The fact that he is right handed would add some balance to the Yankees lineup as well. This could be the type of deal the Yankees were looking to make when they acquired Curtis Granderson last year, only better. Unlike Granderson, Upton doesn’t have severe platoon splits and has a greater ceiling.

I believe the Yankees have a great shot at Upton if they really want him. Remember, Kevin Towers spent a good deal of this past year working for the Yankees. He knows the Yankee farm system, and was spotted a number of games in Trenton. Why not deal with a team that you know very well?

  1. Viper

    Never gonna happen.

The price for Upton will be too steep and the outfield is not exactly an area of concern with this team this offseason.

    Rotation. Rotation. Rotation.

Oh yeah, and resign Jeter, Mo, and Pettitte.
