San Diego Draft Tidbit via Paul DePodesta

By Mike Silva ~ November 1st, 2010. Filed under: Mike Silva.

I caught this quote from DePodesta’s blog “It Might Be Dangerous…You Go First” in an August 17h post:

Seriously, at the end of the day, we were unexpectedly able to sign a handful of players in the 2010 draft in over slot deals, including Cates, Barbato, and Dore. We can also be opportunistic going forward since we expected to spend a lot more money yesterday. Lastly, it doesn’t change the fact that from 2007-2009 only the Yankees and Red Sox spent more on amateur players than we did. We planned for that trend to continue in 2010, and we’ll plan for it again in 2011.

Ownership had this to say about their philosophy on the draft:

“Where he makes a decision that we should go after a player that may be different than the slot says, we’re going to follow that,” Fred Wilpon said.

Said Jeff Wilpon: “I think we’ve gone over quite a bit. Maybe we didn’t go for that reach player, and that certainly might change.”

I know Sandy Alderson wasn’t around for this years draft, but from 2007 to 2009 only the Yankees and Red Sox spent more on amateur players than San Diego. When you couple that fact, with the quotes from the Wilpon’s, you have to think the teams drafting philosophy will change. This is a great sign for the Mets future as they have notoriously not gone over slot, and spent very little on the draft.

To listen to me talk about the new Mets regime, including an appearance by WFAN’s Evan Roberts, download last night’s podcast.
