Despite Season, Mets Should Look at Vazquez

By Mike Silva ~ September 30th, 2010. Filed under: Mike Silva, New York Mets, New York Yankees.

As bad as Javier Vazquez was this season with the Yankees I believe he is someone that could be salvageable for a National League club.

For his career Vazquez has an ERA+ of 110 in the National League. As a matter of fact his struggles could be more correlated to his time in Yankees pinstripes than necessarily the American League as he was a solid starter for Ozzie Guillen in Chicago.

Joel Sherman believes that Vazquez would command somewhere in the 1 year $4 million dollar range. Considering that Johan Santana‘s return date is unknown, the Mets could use an inexpensive starter with upside. Who else would fit that description this winter than Vazquez?

If healthy, Vazquez can provide you innings, miss bats, and win around 15 games. There has been a drop in velocity this year, and his strikeout rate is down to below 7 per game for the first time in his career.

If the contract is in the vicinity that Sherman predicts, I don’t see why Vazquez is a risk the Mets should pass up.

Why would the Mets want Yankee trash? Oh, & for ONLY $4 million a year?

As a Yankees fan who doesn’t hate the Mets, I would say: “They can have him!”
I don’t understand Javy’s problems in pinstripes, he really doesn’t look all that flustered on the mound, like Whitson did, but he obviously just can’t handle the Bronx. If the Mets get him and he performs like a #4 in the NL I say more power to them. Even this year he’s better than Perez!

4 million,15 wins? Are you kidding? 8-10 million and 8-12 wins (maybe).

His ERA for 8 years in the NL is 4.02 vs. 4.65 for 5 years in the AL, and I presume Citi Field is a better pitchers park than Yankee Stadium, though I haven’t researched this. And alproof, $4 mil is very reasonable these days for a mid-rotation starter and a crapload less than the $12 mil Perez is due next year. Seems like a good gamble to me.

Vazquez is home run prone. The big park the mets play would help vazquez. I think he is wothy a 3 – 4 million one year risk. I beleive he could win between 10 – 15 games there.
