Put Manuel Out of His Misery

By Mike Silva ~ September 22nd, 2010. Filed under: Mike Silva, New York Mets.

I have been critical of Jerry Manuel for a while. His tenure with the Mets has been a conundrum, from his first day on the job when he threatened to “go gangsta” on Jose Reyes, all the way to these final sublime days Jerry has surprised, frustrated, and angered many at various times. I thought he was the right change after Willie Randolph when hired in June of 2008, but it turned out he was a fun first date that turned into the marriage from hell. Despite my feelings on his performance, I do think Jerry Manuel is a decent man and deserves better than to be hung out to dry these final two weeks. That’s why I propose the Mets announce he is not coming back now so another embarrassing incident, like the one with Joe Torre yesterday, doesn’t happen again.

If I were Jeff Wilpon I would announce that Manuel will not return in 2011 at the end of this road trip. Give Jerry the option of staying on board the rest of the year, or going home early. If he doesn’t go the Art Howe route, pay him the rest of his 2010 salary and let Chip Hale or Dave Jauss take over the team the rest of the season.

The team has been leaving Jerry out to dry since the 2-9 debacle on the west coast. They punted (rightfully so) the trade deadline, didn’t make a move in August, and leaked their intentions about his future the last few weeks. Give him a reprieve and end this charade now. Manuel deserves at least that much.

I agree with you. Everyone already knows it’s a forgone conclussion that Manuel won’t be back. So why not go ahead and make it official? Going a step beyond, they should also announce which coaches won’t be asked to return, at least in their current roles. One such is Howard Johnson. I love HoJo, but he has been a horrible hitting coach. Last night in Florida was another example of Met ineptitude at the plate. 14 baserunners, 2 runs. TWO RUNS! And only then because of solo home runs! It’s rare when this team gets 10 hits in game (they had 12), so why couldn’t they have come with runners on? I realize they’re playing some youngsters (Thole, Tejeda, Duda), but 12 hits & 2 walks should equal more than 2 runs. Unfortunately, this is not an isolated occurance with this team. I would love to HoJo stay on as a coach, just not hitting coach.

Wait, did I read that Manuel was angry about Torre’s comments regarding Torres’s interest in the Mets job??

Did Manuel forget he lobbied for and backstabbed Willie Randolph while he was a part of Willies coaching staff??

Please…send the guy packing now. He didn’t deserve the job when he was hired and and he certainly hasn’t earned the job during his stay in NY.

That was Gary Carter who did that…

I honestly could care less if Jerry finishes the season or not. Everyone knows he’s gone and everyone knows that the whole front office needs complete house cleaning, that is everyone besides Willpon….

Jerry even made a comment during a post game interview. Somebody asked him what Jerry’s plans are for some pitcher next spring and Jerry said something along the lines of “What makes you believe I’ll be here next spring?”

So everybody knows he’ll be gone, Management knows, the fans know, press knows, the players know and Jerry knows…

The problem is, hiring a new manager won’t fix the issue. Firring Omar won’t fix the issue. You have a organization who’s front office is so screwed up that nothing will ever get fixed. You have four or five different people addressing the media at anyone time about everything.

Imaging how the whole Beltran surprise surgery would look if all we heard was Omar saying that Carlos needed the surgery and the knew about it and gave the OK (even if it was a lie). Instead we got a whole bunch of he said she said and left with a team that looks stupid and a pissed off player. This team consistently looks like fools because you have more chiefs than indianans…

Only Mets fans would go into the season knowing that their team was a .500 caliper team that needed a ton of things to go right to have a chance to compete for the playoffs and then scream catastrophe when it happens. We are a bunch of delusional losers aren’t we…
