Managerial Musical Chairs?

By Mike Silva ~ September 18th, 2010. Filed under: Rumor Mill.

NYBD contributor Frank Russo threw me an interesting tidbit from a National League executive. The sudden retirement of Joe Torre may not be a complete surprise, after all the McCourt divorce has destroyed the Dodgers from the inside, but it could lead to multiple changes across the landscape that impacts the local teams.

There is increasing speculation that Joe Girardi may consider the Cubs job after the season. Back in July I outlined reasons why Chicago would be a much better fit for Girardi versus the thankless pressure cooker of the Bronx. If Girardi does leave, many in the industry believe that Bobby Valentine would immediately become a leading candidate to take the Yankees job. Remember, earlier this week I wrote the Mets very well could be putting Bobby V at the top of their list.

Where does Torre come into play? Apparently three destinations he would consider are the Cubs, Braves, and Mets. Dave Lennon of Newsday believes the Mets (rightfully so) want a higher energy manager to take over after the Jerry Manuel debacle. One alternative is to bring in Torre to clean up the mess, and help mentor Wally Backman to eventually take the reins. However, I was told numerous times Backman prefers to manage a team, and wouldn’t have a ton of interest in a bench coach job. Personally, I am not a proponent of this kind of setup.

Russo also states that many are skeptical about how well Don Mattingly will do running his own ballclub. There apparently was some discontent about his job as hitting coach, as the Dodgers are at the bottom of the National League in offense.

Regardless, this offseason may be more remembered for the managerial carousal than any player transaction during the hot stove.

I’m not so sure Girardi’s going anywhere, esp. if the Yankees get back to the postseason…the Yankees are a far better gig than the Cubs mess.
