Ceciliani Exemplifies Cyclones Baseball

By Mike Silva ~ September 10th, 2010. Filed under: Mets Minors, Mike Silva.

I am not suggesting that Darrell Ceciliani is at the same prospect talent level as Wilmer Flores, Jenrry Mejia, or Kirk Nieuwenhuis. However, you have to love the story that is being written in Brooklyn as they are just a couple of wins away from their second championship. This tenth anniversary season has seen former Mets second basemen Wally Backman as the headline, but it’s never just about the manager, and that is why the 2010 Cyclones are exemplified by outfielder Darrell Ceciliani. It was Ceciliani again providing the catalyst last night that led Brooklyn to their 6-4 clincher over Jamestown.

He would collect two hits and two RBI. This just a night after his mad dash around second on an infield single tied the game in the eighth. This season he hit .351, with a .941 OPS, 2 homers, and 35 RBI. It seems every rally has Ceciliani in the middle of it. The Cyclones are truly a team effort, but they wouldn’t be in the championship series if not for their leading hitter.

Ceciliani is just 20 years old, and needs to show more than a solid run in the NYPL. In the age of the internet players become starts very quickly. As a Madres, Oregon resident it’s hard not to compare him to Madres most famous resident Jacoby Ellsbury. If that is what the Mets eventually have you can’t complain.

The face of the Cyclones is obviously Wally Backman , we all knew that would be the case the day they hired him. The heart and soul of this team is the centerfielder, who exemplifies all that is good with Brooklyn this year. Who knows, maybe the Mets have a very unexpected diamond in the rough.

It can and should be argued that players like Cecillani & Corey Vaughn are really the face of the Cyclones. The manager should NEVER be the face of ANY team, major league or minor league. If he is, then the team has a talent problem. Brooklyn has rarely, if ever, had a talent problem. The talent on this team is another indicator of just why the Mets shouldn’t just fire Omar Minaya completely. While the overall depth of the system might not be great, it has some really intriguing players like the 2 I mentioned, Flores, Neiuenhuis, Ratliff, Familia, Mejia, and Duda to name a few. Those guys plus Niese, Davis, Pelfrey, & Thole were all added on Minaya’s watch. So he at least deserves to stay on as head of scouting & player development at a minimum.

There are a number of terrific stories in Brooklyn this year. Ceciliani who batted .240 last year at Kingsport and led the league in hitting this year. Centeno who struggled hitting at the beginning of the year and finished hitting close to .600 at home and is on fire in the playoffs. Rylan Sandoval who was unbelievable before his injury and who was “discovered” by Wally in Arizona paying to play winter ball and there are others. But the story of the season is Wally Backman, and Wally Ball. I must have listened to 70 ball games on internet radio. It was as exciting and interesting as when I was a kid in the 60′s.
