Jon Niese’s Season in Perspective

By Mike Silva ~ August 22nd, 2010. Filed under: Mike Silva, New York Mets.

Jonathon Niese won his 8th game last night against the Pirates. In a season full of frustration and disappointment, Niese has become one of the bright spots. Anytime you can see through the development of a homegrown left handed starter its something of note. How does Niese season stand up to other prominent homegrown pitchers in Mets history? Better yet, what about the comparisons to Andy Pettitte across town?

Here are some prominent Mets homegrown pitchers and their ERA+ for the first full season of their career:

Bobby Jones (133)- 1994

Tom Seaver (122)-1968

Jerry Koosman (145)- 1968

Mike Pelfrey (113)- 2008

Doc Gooden (137)- 1984

Niese is certainly holding is own with that group, but he is actually having a better season than Pettitte. In 1995, Pettitte was 12-7 with a 4.17 ERA (ERA+ of 111). I am not saying he is as good, or going to have the career of Pettitte, but certainly the foundation is solid.

At this point Jonathon Niese might be a surer bet than Pelfrey in terms of a future in the Mets rotation.

Looks like they seem to have 4 starters that look good enough for a long time.

Plus they are not that far away from having the 5th one.

And if the offense does what it was paid for, then this team would have been deep into the pennent race.

Who knows, perhaps, they will do it from here on in.

I was at Citi Field Saturday night for “Billy Joel: The Last Play at Shea.” It had lots of great historical footage of his career, as well as Mets and Jets action at Shea, including the championship celebrations, Game 6, the relief activities in the aftermath of 9/11, the first game back vs the Braves and Piazza’s big home run, the Pope’s appearance in ’79, the Beatles and othe concerts, the final game, a feature on Pete Flynn, and, of course, Billy’s final concert, complete with guest appearances by Tony Bennett, Paul McCartney, and others. Also, great commentary by Seaver, Piazza, and others. Great show!
