Melancon Rips Yankee Stadium Crowd

By Mike Silva ~ August 19th, 2010. Filed under: Mike Silva, New York Yankees.

Apparently Mark Melancon doesn’t think the Yankee Stadium crowd was very supportive during his short stint. Melancon told the Houston Chronicle the big difference with the crowd at Minute Maid Park is that “you feel like (the fans) have your back.” I am sure this isn’t a big deal to Yankees fans as Melancon only pitched 20 innings for the team, four of it at Yankee Stadium.

Many believed Melancon would be in the Bronx by now setting up Mariano Rivera. His numbers were impressive in the minors, posting a 2.79 ERA and striking out a batter per inning. He never received much of an opportunity to pitch during his big league tenure, so I wonder if this statement is more frustration about his utilization than reality. New York crowds are tough, but I find it hard to believe he was a major target of their ire.

Sometimes prospects fall out of favor – justified or not- and need a change of scenery. The best thing for Mark Melancon’s career is pitching for the Astros. Instead of ripping the Stadium crowd he should focus on producing and the rest will take care of itself.

By the way, the man he was traded for, Lance Berkman, has a .555 OPS thus far. Juan Miranda is looking pretty good right now.
