Is K-Rod’s Injury Believable?

By Mike Silva ~ August 16th, 2010. Filed under: Mike Silva, New York Mets.

When news came down of Francisco Rodriguez‘s torn thumb ligament it wasn’t a big surprise. Especially since it came from the fight with his father in law. This is the culmination of four years of collapses, injuries, and management mishaps. With that said, it’s odd that just two days after pitching a scoreless inning the injury was diagnosed and treated.

Yes, the Mets are not known for their injury management practices, but it couldn’t be practical for Rodriguez to pitch with the tear. How did he grip the ball (the injury is to his right thumb) and make it through 11 pitches on Saturday? Could the Mets be using this as an opportunity to “ice” K-Rod the rest of the year, allow him to get his life on track, and stem some of the bad public relations? Is it farfetched to not lie, but stretch the truth, about an injury? Wouldn’t be the first time in professional sports, and surely not the last.

I guess we will never know, but I don’t take the Mets story at face value. Something is fishy about the situation. Regardless, it very well may be best for the team and K-Rod to go their separate ways until 2011.

If there’s something fishy going on you can bet the MLBPA will be all over it. Secondly, I believe the injury has to documented and submitted to MLB when a team is going to put a player on the DL. Remember, they (MLB) investigated Oliver Perez’ knee injury earlier when the Mets put him on the DL after he refused a minor league assignment. So it is entirely possible that we haven’t heard the last of this.
