The Irony of Age and Wisdom

By Mike Silva ~ August 6th, 2010. Filed under: Mike Silva, New York Yankees.

Everyone hears the old saying that “youth is wasted on the young.” I thought of that when reading  how Joel Sherman’s pregame chat impact A-Rod before his 600th homerun. You can tell from the story that Rodriguez was impacted by the Sherman piece. Actually, it’s one of the rare times an athlete will give the media that kind of credit in a public forum. The interesting thing about A-Rod is that as his skills erode it appears he has found peace with his standing in the game.

I have been told by some that A-Rod’s steroid confession had a lot to do with his new outlook. Of course, we will never know what is going on in Rodriguez’s head, but since he came clean that spring day his relationship with the team is outstanding. A night before the historic homer, Derek Jeter even had a conversation with A-Rod about how he dealt with the pressure when chasing Lou Gehrig’s Yankee hit record. Three years ago no one would have believed such a dialogue possible. Could it be after six years in pinstripes (which seem like 60) A-Rod has finally come to peace with himself? Has he mastered the mental demons that caused him to fail on and off the field in New York? How ironic the culmination of this is in a season where it’s possible his skills have begun to erode.

Whether A-Rod can perform at an All Star level the next seven seasons remains to be seen. Even if he doesn’t, the organization is stuck with an immovable contract. In many ways he becomes the big presence in the room when Jeter retires- and I suspect Jeter will before Rodriguez contract runs out – and asked to be a leader on the team. How ironic that A-Rod figured out the mental side of the game after his skills erode. What could have been if Rodriguez learned this lesson back in 2004? I guess we will never know. I guess that is why youth is wasted on the young.

I’m confused…did Sherman tell A-Rod that story? The piece says nothing about any interaction before the gam…

    *before the game…

Basically A-Rod read Sherman’s story, before spoke to him about it, and then spoke about it in the press game. Its over a span of a couple of days so the one Sherman piece might not do it justice.
