Why Tampa Could Be So Dangerous to the Yanks

By Mike Silva ~ August 2nd, 2010. Filed under: Mike Silva, New York Yankees.

I believe the Texas Ranger and Cliff Lee is what stand in the way of the Yankees making a repeat trip to the World Series. With that said, it may be Tampa they have to worry about in a seven game series. If the playoffs started today the Yankees would play Chicago and Tampa would take on Texas in the first round. Although I don’t think Chicago will be an easy series, the Yanks should be able to vanquish the White Sox. If Tampa finds a way to beat Cliff Lee and Texas, the Yanks would go into the ALCS losing one big advantage: Yankee Stadium.

In a season where most teams struggle on the road, the Rays have thrived away from their empty ballpark. Remember, Tampa doesn’t have much of a fan base so they really never are a home team. You often see that with the Marlins as they thrive playing in front of raucous road crowds. Right now the Rays have the most road wins in baseball (33) just ahead of the Yankees (32). Although they play in the corporate version of Yankee Stadium they still have won 70% of the games in the House that Steinbrenner built. As for the postseason, only the Phillies were able to win a game in the building last season.

Brian Cashman said in spring training the Rays concern him because they are playing with something to prove. It’s no secret the payroll will be paired down after the season and many of the stars – like Carl Crawford and Carlos Pena – very likely will go elsewhere. The best era of baseball in Tampa history is fast coming to a close. In other words what is there to fear? Certainly not the Yankees and Yankee Stadium.

I still believe Cliff Lee and the Rangers will stop the Yankees from repeating this year. Regardless, if Tampa finds a way to win a short series against Texas, I wouldn’t punch my World Series ticket just yet. The Rays are bold enough to go into the Stadium and win a few games. That should make the Yankee faithful very nervous.

I understand that you are supposed to cover baseball teams in New York but judging from the site’s logo, I assume that you are a Mets fan. With that being said, when do you ever write a positive article about the Yankees? I mean I understand the inferiority complex all non-Yankees fans have to deal with but c’mon guy, give it a rest. I guess I’m not surprised really, I understand that you have nothing to write about the boys from Queens since they are as competitive as my cousin’s little league team so you resort to write yet another negative article about the Yankees. How is this for an idea… instead of writing about your OPINION about how the Yankees won’t make it to the World Series, why don’t you write an article about why the Metsies won’t make it to the playoffs AGAIN this year?

Meh, it’s the hip thing to pick against the Yankees. That’s what people do whether it makes sense or not.

The Yanks are only going to get better because they improved their team at the deadline and they are going to get Pettitte back and probably Aceves, too.

They are better than either the Rays or Rangers.

BTW, Silva picked the Phillies over the Yanks in the World Series too so we saw how that turned out despite Cliff Lee’s performance.

    Hey Mike,
Yankee fans are definitely concerned with the Rays. The only place I disagree with you is Tampa would eat the Rangers up like a Texas chili dog [if there is such a thing as a Texas chili dog].

Let me add one thing…this Berkman thing?…BAD move…he’s on the downside, he’s never DH’d, Joe’s gonna force this guy into the lineup based on reputation, it will put pressure on the wrong guys, including Posada, it’s going to create “camps” in the locker room, and we lose Curtis, another young, aggressive kid who brings more energy, defense and talent.
Woods is the big move…keep an eye on how the Berkman maneuvering becomes disruptive.
    Best regards,
    Louis

you are the most negative anti-yankee pessimistic excuse for sportswriter ive ever had the displeaure of reading (I guess the pesimism and obvious jealousy comes from living in NY and having the misfortune of being a Mets fan) . how do I get your articles banned from my sports spyder? and most importantly how do I get back the 3 minutes I wasted reading your article???????

  5. Faiaz

Dana, if you get a petition going for banning Silva’s articles under the Yankees tab on Sportspyder, I will be the first one to sign. I absolutely love Sportspyder but this dude’s articles must be filed under the Mets ONLY. I think this douche named this site NY baseball digest instead of Mets baseball digest just for the opportunity to write these negative articles about the Yankees and not have to worry about comments from Yankees fans such as… “oh this is a Mets site so don’t worry about the Yankees.”

    Guys

To say I am anti Yankees is absurd. Do I wave pom poms like a Yankee fan site? No. You do realize NY’s colors are blue and orange? Not pinstripes.

I spent more time praising the Yankees prospects and in Trenton than any Mets affiliate. Jed Weisberger writes for the site and is a Thunder reporter. You are the type of Yankees fans that want ESPN to can Wallace Matthews because he doesn’t spew the popular kool aid talking points.

What about the Rays winning on the road is inaccurate?

I am sorry that you don’t like my opinion, but it’s valid to be concerned about the Rays and Texas in a short series.

This site is about New York baseball. You want fan propaganda to make you feel good you know where to go.

I am sure Dallas at Sportspyder would agree.

    Thanks for reading!

I never said they weren’t better on paper, but doesn’t Texas concern you in a short series?

You were one Johnny Damon stolen base from that being a series – it’s not like the World Series was a cake walk.

FRIGGIN’ CLASSIC!!!!! Great timing Mike, thanx for proving my point.

  9. Faiaz

Stating “You were one Johnny Damon stolen base from that being a series” is as lame as a Yankees fan bitching about what would have happened if Dave Roberts didn’t steal that base on Mo a few years back. Whatever happened already happened so move the fv<k on. How many what-ifs are there in baseball history? Actually forget baseball, how many what-ifs happen in real life every single day? If people wasted their time with what-ifs(because it does NOT change the past) they wouldn't have time to worry about "what-can" better their future.

And the Yanks were a decent Burnett start in Game 5 away from beating them in 5 games. We can go round and round like this all day long.

The series was never that close.

No, the Rangers don’t scare me. Are they a good team? Yes.

But the Yanks have had their number for awhile now. They just don’t match up as well against the Yanks like they do against everyone else.

  11. Shamik

Yeesh Mike, you really managed to bring the lunatics out of the woodwork didnt you? God forbid anyone point out that there be some legitimate competition that may possibly bar the Yanks god-given right to the championship.
