How the Yankees Could Obtain Jayson Werth

By Mike Silva ~ July 28th, 2010. Filed under: Mike Silva, New York Yankees.

You all know I am not enamored with Curtis Granderson. Despite three big homers this week, Granderson has been very pedestrian on offense, can’t hit left handed pitching, and nothing exciting defensively. Brett Gardner is clearly the best centerfielder in the Bronx.

One of the players the Yankees have inquired on this year is Jayson Werth. There has been ton of speculation about the Phillies dealing Werth in a package for Roy Oswalt. I think Oswalt goes nowhere this week so why couldn’t both teams get together and swap Curtis Granderson for Werth?

Werth fits so much better in the Yankees lineup. He is a right handed, hits for power, gets on base, and solid defensively. Enter his walk year I have little doubt the Phils will let him go and replace him in right with top prospect Domonic Brown. Granderson would feast on the short Citizen’s Bank Park dimensions. You also would shore up the outfield defense by moving Shane Victorino to left and reducing the reliance on the aging Raul Ibanez. Granderson is also signed to a club friendly deal (18.25 the next two years with a $2 million dollar buyout in 2013).

This, of course, is just my wild idea. There is no indication that either team would consider such a trade. Who knows, it makes so much sense that perhaps the Yankees and Phillies read this and start talking. As long as I get a commission from the deal they are free to steal shamelessly.

Seems a little two one-sided. Though the yankees would essentially be renting Werth for the rest of the year, the Phils need more in return then just Granderson.

Argument is inconsistent and makes little sense as I read it. You initially criticize Granderson ‘s game and then laud how he’d bring his lefty power, d and a friendly contract to Philly Those all all the reasons why the Yanks traded for him despite his splits. Yanks be getting Werth for just a third of season, he ‘s going to cost more will be willing to spend lest they give up pursuit of Lee, so the cost of Granderson is way too high even though it would be incrementally beneficial this year. A better move would be to add Werth on the cheap for B prospects if possible and use a 4 man rotation in of and dh

I love Werth. However, what about this wild thought? Acquire Manny Ramirez through waivers after the deadline and his return from the DL and make him the DH for the last 2 months as a rental. It would probably cost a low level prospect. It would pain me to see him in pinstripes but when it comes down to it, a motivated Manny would certainly raise the bar for a lineup that is clearly showing age and has been inconsistent.

Why not try to reacquire Xavier Nady? He is a good righty power source to spell Granderson against lefties, and could come cheaply.

dont’ trade away Jason Werth, He and others brought championship quality baseball to Phila and he should stay with the team sink or swim. and will swim and we will win the pennant. AGAIN KEEP THE GUYS WHO GOT YOU THERE,CAUSE THE WILL GET YOU THERE AGAIN. U MUST KEEP THE FAITH…..WE ARE ARLEADY STARTING TO SET THERE.. STAY WITH IT

So because Granderson is useless to the Yankees (supposedly), he would be a huge help to the Phillies. Makes sense. If the Phillies wanted to reduce reliance on/cut Ibanez, they could just call up Brown any time.

Great thought, but the Phils don’t want or need Granderson. They prefer to put Brown in center and move Ibanez, giving them an alignment of Victorino, Nrown & Werth. They’ve made it pretty clear the only way they move Werth is for a #2 or #3 starter + prospects + salary relief. Add in Victorino’s cureent injury and Granderson’s deficiencies- no way I see this happening.

this guy is a yanks fan not a legitimate writer why is anyone taking this seriously. I want to trade Kyle Kendrick for C.C. Sabathia not gonna HAPPEN!

If the Yankees make the rgt. trades, they won’t need (mention’d.)Jason Werth,Xavier Nady or Manny Ramirez.Help is needed at d./h.&b./p. HOW does Scott Downs(lfty.from blu.jays)&Austin Kearns(d./h.frm.clev.indians)sound.

The offense needs no help at this point. It’s tops in both leagues in runs scored, for crying out loud. The team has the best record in baseball. However, the Yankee pitching staff is about 9th in runs allowed and earned runs allowed. Seems as if the stats point the way toward the need for better pitching, eh? Much of the responsibility for the relatively high runs allowed stats falls on the shoulders of Chamberlain, Park and Roberston before he began straightening out. Between them, they’ve allowed 66 earned runs in 109 innings. That’s about a 5.5 ERA. If they were one starter, where would they be now? One, or even two, strong relief pitchers are needed.

Werth may fit in the lineup – but maybe not in the clubhouse.
Granderson is good for the Yanks in the clubhouse and on the field. Maybe he doesn’t have the avg. (but who is hitting at their capabilities in the lineup right now? the only one still hitting over .300 is Cano and his avg has dropped 30 points in a month) Werth, on the other hand is a streaky hitter and a moody team mate, a head case if you will. There’s a reason teams don’t keep him around very long and the Yanks don’t need to find out why. This is an amazing team. None of the big names are hitting what they should and the pitching has been at times suspect; but people, despite these struggles and key injuries, THEY HAVE THE BEST RECORD IN BASEBALL! Why create a crisis? Someone always comes up big (ala Granderson) with a key hit to win a ballgame. Wait until the big guys get going and you’ll see the distance widen in the next few weeks. This team has good chemistry and believe in each other. They like each other. And they play well together always believing they can win until the last out is made. Leave ‘em alone. Granderson yes, Werth , no.

Totally agree. Think Mike and Phil fans are undervaluing Granderson. He has flaws but he has talent and I have NO interest in dealing him for a 3 month rental.

  13. murd

yanks need soria very badly. trade joba and thames and high prospect to get him

  14. BMcGrath

Or – maybe the Tigers miss Granderson so much they will give up Austin Jackson to get him back.

We already made one bad deal to get him – we might as well hold on to him for at least one season to see if it works out.
