Future Uncertain, Gap Closed For Yanks

By Mike Silva ~ July 14th, 2010. Filed under: Mike Silva, New York Yankees.

It’s never easy following a legend, and make no mistake about it George Steinbrenner is a legend, that is why his passing is different than that of any other owner. To this day there hasn’t been another Babe Ruth and I would compare Steinbrenner’s ownership to that of the great Yankees slugger. How many people can turn a quarter of a million dollars into one billion, change the face of an industry, and make a strong brand elite? That is exactly what George Steinbrenner did during his tenure as Yankees owner. That is why the future is uncertain, almost uneasy, for the followers of the Yankees today.

Back in May I interviewed Bill Madden, author of the book “Steinbrenner: The Last Lion of Baseball.” I told Bill I had my doubts the Steinbrenner family would continue on as owners after George’s death. His sons just did not appear to have the same passion, perhaps no one can, that he did. Madden agreed and shared my doubts about the future of the team post George. I never thought we would be addressing that conversation just weeks later. The thought of ownership by anyone other than the Steinbrenner family should be a cause for concern. Quite frankly, no one is going to have the desire to spend and compete at the level of George, just like no one has been able to match the aura of Babe Ruth since he retired in 1935.

Of course this is speculation and last night NYBD contributor and baseball historian Frank Russo told us that many in the organization believe the family, specific George’s daughters, will want to carry on the legacy. Whatever the case may be the future is uncertain in the Bronx for the first time in four decades. Will the Yankees survive? Sure, the infrastructure is strongly put in place. Will things ever be the same? Not a chance. The gap between the Yankees and everyone else just became a little smaller.

Were his children to sell the team or start being overly stingy with the payroll imagine the countless stories which would include the line: “Steinbrenner is rolling over in his grave . . . ” No kid wants to feel that way no matter how old they are. Can I see them honestly having a budget and sticking to it? Yes but I don’t see them having The Pirates payroll anytime in the next century.
