Yanks to Sign Garrett Atkins?

By Mike Silva ~ July 8th, 2010. Filed under: Mike Silva, New York Yankees, Rumor Mill.

A source told NYBD the Yankees are looking to sign Garrett Atkins. Joseph Delgrippo, who does a weekly show Fox Sports 1310, believes it will be a minor league deal and that Atkins will be assigned to AAA Scranton.

No official announcement has come from the Yankees, but this move makes sense on a lot of levels. Just two years ago Atkins had 21 homers, 99 RBI’s, and an OPS of .780 for the Rockies. He was non tendered in the offseason and put up miserable numbers in Baltimore (.562 OPS) which led to him being released a week ago. For his career he hits lefties (.846 career OPS) and can play both corners. On days that Alex Rodriguez needs to DH he is probably a better offensive replacement than Ramiro Pena at third.

Atkins is the kind of veteran that will “rediscover” his stroke with the Yankees. In 2000, Glenallen Hill came over from the Cubs and hit 16 homers in just 143 at bats to help the Yankees down the stretch. Sometimes putting on the pinstripes allows players to find the fountain of youth.

It’s a low risk/high reward type of move that can’t hurt. I fully expect this news to go mainstream in the next few days.
