Is Laird Headed for All Time Eastern League Season?

By Mike Silva ~ June 25th, 2010. Filed under: Mike Silva, Yanks Minors.

We have profiled Brandon Laird before on this website before. As a matter of fact, NYBD contributor Jed Weisberger predicted that he would breakout this season during a December hot stove prospects show.

Yesterday, against Erie he had 2 homers, 7 RBI to bring his season totals to 18 homers, 76 RBI, and a .902 OPS.

I reached out to Jed and asked what are some of the best Eastern League seasons of all time and is Laird headed for one? Jed replied with:

Rick Lancellotti hit 41 homers in 1979. Ken Strong hit 41 in 1930. The RBI mark is 138 by Hawk Harrelson in 1962. Kevin Millar had 131 for Portland in 1997.

Laird is about half way through the Eastern League schedule so if you double these numbers he could finish with 36 homers and 152 RBI. That would beat Harrelson’s mark and be just shy of the 41 homers hit by Lancellotti. Of course, it’s not out of the question that he receives a promotion to Scranton which changes everything.

Laird is in the conversation for the big league club as soon as next year. More likely he is trade bait since the corners are manned by Mark Teixeira and Alex Rodriguez. As I said a couple of weeks ago it’s too bad the Yankees aren’t under the old A-Rod contract or they could have a nice player to transition to next season.

There’s a good chance Laird may never play 3B in the bigs for anyone. He’s brutal out there.

Unless he proves his defense dramatically, his likely destination will be in the outfield or DH.
