Mets Have Interest in Carmona

By Mike Silva ~ June 20th, 2010. Filed under: Mike Silva, Rumor Mill.

Just last week we reported the Indians would be willing to listen to offers for RHP Fausto Carmona. I believed he would be an interesting option since he is young (26 years old), contract friendly (three team options), and would have a better balance of upside/cost than a Roy Oswalt, Cliff Lee, and Dan Haren. Carmona also has playoff experience as he shut down the Yankees in the 2007 ALDS. Today Buster Olney of ESPN confirms the Mets are indeed having discussion about him (do they read NYBD?) for the same reasons that I outlined above.

The downside to Carmona, as Olney points out, is “he has shown he is capable of veering completely off course, and you do wonder how pitching in the high pressure of New York would impact him.” Could you have a right handed version of Oliver Perez?

Young, cost controlled, high upside starters don’t come around often. I would seriously consider Carmona if the price of Lee and Haren is prohibitive (Oswalt seems to be off the Mets radar).

Absolutely agree. Club options make this a no brainer if the asking price is right.

His name is Fausto, not Francisco. You’d think a website devoted to baseball would be able to get someone’s first name right…

Fausto is a much cooler name that Francisco. I certainly wouldn’t give up much for him as there is a big risk of him flopping. In fact, this would probably be a backup deal I keep in mind in case some other deals fall through. I’m not taking any risks with my farm if I’m the Mets.

Your right Marc, sloppy mistake that was corrected.

Haren is still my first choice.

Carmona just gives me flashbacks to Oliver Perez …. hopefully we are done with that nightmare and don’t start that over again.

It’s great that Carmona shut down the Yankees in the 2007 ALDS …. Perez shut down the Cardinals in the 2006 ALDS …. what difference does that really make in 2010?

Carmona’s 2008 & 2009 were not that good …. is it a gamble? Sure …. is he the missing piece to the rotation? Not so sure.

As a 5th starter? Sure, why not? But not to come in and put the Mets rotation over the top to contend in 2010 … not in my opinion anyway.
