Yanks vs. Plus .500 Teams

By Mike Silva ~ June 18th, 2010. Filed under: Mike Silva, New York Yankees.

After the Yankees loss last night Mark Feinsand of the Daily News had this to say on Twitter:

“Tampa Bay has lost, so the Yankees will remain in a first-place tie if they lose. Not that they deserve it – or that it matters on June 17.”

Of course, it elicited the usual hysteria that accompanies most opinions on Twitter. It made me think what is the Yanks record vs. teams with currently are .500 or better this season? Going into tonight’s action it’s a very pedestrian 21-20. Essentially the Yankees have been a .500 club.

Last year they were 52-35 (.598) against teams that finished with a .500 or better record.

It’s no crime to beat up on the lesser teams, but so far the Yankees don’t appear to be any better than many of the top clubs. This shouldn’t be a surprise since Teixeira hasn’t really got going, Granderson has been a bust to date, and the bullpen has been a major disappointment. If not for the outstanding starting pitching – namely Hughes and Pettitte- who knows where they would be at.

Yes, the Yankees are in first place today, but is it a mirage or a real testament to how they have played? I think that is very much a question up for debate right now.

Mike, Mike, Mike. I usually have the utmost respect for your opinions, for the first time I sense a little Met jealousy creeping in here.

Check out the run differential numbers and you’ll see the Yanks are clearly the best team in baseball. They havent even hit their stride yet, but its only a matter of time.

It’s really not jealousy, they have done a great job in so many areas the Mets lack. It was more of a response to the Feinsand comment and just a cautionary point. I would have done it for the Mets as well.

We heard all the same garbage last year too before the All Star Break and it was a load in the shorts just like it is now.

Last year it was all about how the Yanks couldn’t beat Boston or they couldn’t beat the Angels. Blah, blah, blah.

They will be fine. Those who are going to complain aren’t going to listen to logic and reasoning.

It’s all a bunch of baloney.

It’s very simple guys. Either the Yankees will win or they won’t – time will tell. All of your agonizing and arguing either way won’t make any difference.
