WFAN Uses NYBD Audio Without Citation

By Mike Silva ~ June 18th, 2010. Filed under: Mike Silva, Sports Media Commentary.

The mainstream media likes to point out various violations of journalistic integrity when it comes to blogs or independent media. Very rarely do they add infrastructure to address the situation when the shoe is on the proverbial other foot. It should come as no surprise that WFAN falls right into line with that line of thought under the leadership of Mark Chernoff.

I received a call this morning that the audio of the interview with Mia Harris that was conducted on Wednesday night with me and Dr. Mark Filippi was used during this morning’s edition of Boomer & Carton.

Glad to see another person’s pain is a source of amusement for the staff at WFAN. This is the same station that touts they are #1 when their competitor doesn’t even have the proper signal to compete. It’s the equivalent of the Harlem Globetrotters engraving a Larry O’ Brien trophy for themselves.

Normally I wouldn’t care, I don’t need the recognition since my ego isn’t as large as other internet and mainstream personalities, but common respect and decency should be in play. Don’t want to mention the website? Fine. Just say my name or Dr. Filippi’s in passing, just like the fine print on the back of a label.

Of course, what do you expect from the narcissistic Craig Carton who is currently faced with a floundering Spike TV show? Could someone explain how NYBD without a budget, brand name, and limited resources can out pace Craig Carton on TV? I have the answer, but why should I help Mr. Carton since he won’t even credit me for work that was produced on this site.

I sent WFAN Operations Manager (I love titles) Mark Chernoff a letter voicing my displeasure. Since he is too busy worrying about the Vitamin Water in the backroom I don’t believe I will receive a response.

Subject: Thank You for Using My Audio

It came to my attention the morning show aka “Boomer & Carton” used audio that you plucked off my website www.nybaseballdigest.com

Thank you for using the audio on the morning show. Glad to see that WFAN sees its funny they underutilized, underpaid, and ignored one of their talents.

On the flip side, I find it disrespectful that you used audio from my site and didn’t even credit my name, Dr. Filippi’s name, or the websites. I understand you don’t want to give me traffic, I could care less about that, but a quick note saying credit to Mike Silva or Dr. Filippi should have been in place. Considering your “NY’s #1,” and remind everyone about that, I would think this would be second nature.

I cite you every time your station breaks news, does something stupid (quite often), or gets it right (not very often at all). Mark, I understand you’re not a sports guy and you are from rock radio, but I think this is pretty standard procedure regardless of radio genre.

As for calling it “an internet show,” as you did Mr. Carton, I continue to out distance your Spike TV show and videos with no budget and my lowly brand name. If my show isn’t worth a mention what does that mean for yours on Spike?

Of course, there is no source of this audio on the website because, as we know from history, tapes get “mysteriously lost” at the FAN. Those darn interns!

I will take the time to let my audience know about this corporate violation and hopefully you will do the right thing next time.

If I were you Mr. Chernoff I would focus on plugging the leaks that go around over there. Better yet, improve the product, staff, and corporate atmosphere and maybe you wouldn’t have this situation at all.

Regards

maybe he did it because you talk bad about him constantly? He probably read that and laughed. No one really cares for an Operations Manager for a radio station. If you don’t like the station, you can just change it.

I read your blog on occasion. While you’re not the only one to trip over conventional rules of written and verbal etiquette, I am startled when it comes from someone who makes his living writing and talking. Your buddy, Craig Carton, makes the same mistake relentlessly.
“ … night with me and Dr. Mark Filippi …”
Etiquette (and just pure respect) dictates that the other person is mentioned first, i.e. “ … night with Dr. Mark Filippi and …”
The same error of everyday etiquette is made in your letter to WFAN Operations Manager, Mark Chernoff. I understand the idea of sending a letter and share your estimation on WFAN, but the letter is written in a highly unprofessional, eve juvenile manner.

Galby thanks for pointing out the grammatical error.

I think the corporate violation is the real story here, not a simple grammatical error, which many wouldn’t care about.

The real juvenile actions are by WFAN, led by their Operations Manager who is clearly asleep at the wheel over there.

It is sad to hear that WFAN hijacked your interview without any permission. Unfortunately, this surprises no one.

The saddest part about WFAN is that the station does very little homework, because it does not require it. The station’s ratings continue to be good to very good, despite the quality of the shows being far from impressive.

WFAN can continue to put out mediocre radio and annihilate 1050 or any other sports radio station. ESPN’s format is not working in New York, despite many dollars in advertising from 1050.

This city needs a new, New York-centric sports station. If done properly, WFAN’s Empire of Egomania would finally take a hit.

Hey Mike. Stop whining. You sound like a 14 year old girl who just got dumped. Take your cute little internet show with you and go away.
