Francesa: “Mets Don’t Want Oswalt”

By Mike Silva ~ June 17th, 2010. Filed under: Mike Silva, Rumor Mill.

While listening to WFAN’s Mike Francesa today he threw out an interesting blurb when a caller told him he wasn’t a supporter of the Mets going after Roy Oswalt. “The Mets don’t want Oswalt.” the “Sports Pope” proclaimed. Whether this is opinion or fact remains to be seen, but Mike was the one that broke the signing of Jason Bay back in December.

It appears the team has their sights set on Cliff Lee. Matt Pignataro of Seven Train to Shea was out in Spokane today and told me the Mets recently contacted Seattle and were told the M’s were not yet ready to deal the lefty. Of course, we have been reporting the presence of Seattle scouts at various levels of the Yankees organization so it appears they are preparing for the inevitable. George King of the NY Post reported that Seattle would want Eduardo Nunez and Jesus Montero or Austin Romine. I would bet one of the Yankees young pitchers would have to be in the deal as well.

The league source also told Pignataro that Seattle is interested in Jonathon Niese, Kirk Nieuwenhuis, Jenrry Mejia, Wilmer Flores, and Jeurys Familia. Matt Cerrone reported the other day that Jonathan Niese would be a “must” in any deal with Seattle and, thus far, the Mets are unwilling to part with him.

Just like Roy Halladay last summer, Lee will be the topic of conversation with both local teams. I believe whether the Mets get serious about Lee will be determined by their play over the next couple of weeks.

    Mike:

I guess one logical reason that they do not want the contract of Oswalt is his salaries of 16 million per year in 2011 and 2012 and with the arbitration of Francoeur and Pelfrey coming up ($6 million for Francoeur and $5million for Pelfrey) adding Oswalt’s contract would bring it up to $140 million for 12 players alone and I think it has been stated here on thi blog by many, that the Wilpons have a budget and they will not go over it. With Lee, you trade two prospects and you get two prospects back once he signs with another club. In essence you would pay at most $3 million to Lee for this 2010 plus whatever you pay to sign the draft picks as compensation for losing Lee

That is a great point. That, of course, assumes the Mets will pick up the Oswalt option, which is a prerequisite of acquiring him,.
