Yankees Rumors: Damon, French, Hinske, Lee

By Mike Silva ~ June 14th, 2010. Filed under: Mike Silva, Rumor Mill.

During the second hour last night I spoke to NYBD contributors Jed Weisberger and Frank Russo. They heard some of the following rumblings about the Yankees:

- Jed spoke to someone that believes Johnny Damon would like to return to the Yankees next year. Not sure if the feeling is mutual now with the development of Brett Gardner, possible interest in Jayson Werth, and Carl Crawford on the open market. Would Detroit consider trading Damon if they fell out of the race? Right now they are 2.5 games behind Minnesota in the AL Central. Damon would look perfect in left field for the Yankees as he is hitting .287 with 3 homers and 18 RBI.

- He also believes 98% of the Cliff Lee interest is on the Seattle side wanting to trade him to New York. They are doing their homework now in preparation of potential talks. Jed reiterated that Brian Cashman and the Yankees will not rent players which makes him believe Lee would be more realistic after the season. Of course, there is always the possibility of requesting a 72 hour window to negotiate a contract.

- Jed was told Seattle was headed to Portland to scout the Red Sox organization as well. Remember, Daisuke Matsuzaka is injured so the Sox would have a need.

- Frank Russo is hearing the Yankees are interested in Mariners lefty Luke French. The Tigers traded French to Seattle in the Jarrod Washburn deal last summer. This season he has a 1.93 ERA for Tacoma in the Pacific Coast League, but has struggled in the big leagues during his career to the tune of a 5.30 ERA. I could see the Yankees using French out of the bullpen. Also, and this is speculation, could French be part of a Cliff Lee deal?

- Russo also reported that Kevin Towers was scouting Cliff Lee when he pitched against the San Diego Padres this weekend. He believes the Yankees when “push comes to shove” would include Austin Romine in a deal for Lee. All along he believes the Yankees will make a serious run at Lee this season and not wait for free agency.

- Frank heard that Lee isn’t interested in staying on the West Coast and Boston is not a desired destination as well. Of course Lee can’t stop the Mariners from trading him there, but it possibly could hurt Seattle’s chances of securing the best talent in a trade.

- Finally, Frank took Brian Cashman to task for his MO of breaking down and rebuilding the bench each year. Currently the Yanks are looking for an “Eric Hinske type bat,” who ironically is a player they allowed to walk over the winter. The Yanks called Atlanta to see if Hinske was available and were told the Braves had no intention of dealing him. Hinske is hitting .313 with 4 homers and 23 RBI this season.

Any word on Lee’s opinion of the Mets?

  2. Stu B

If the Yankees aren’t interested in trading for Lee, then how is French going to be part of a Lee deal?
