Why Jeff Francoeur is So Important

By Mike Silva ~ May 31st, 2010. Filed under: Mike Silva, New York Mets.

The Mets received more bad news with respect to Carlos Beltran earlier this weekend. At this point it would be optimistic to get Beltran back by the All Star Break, if at all and, as Joel Sherman pointed out, how much could you expect from Carlos if he returns? It has gotten to the point where it’s unwise to talk about a possible Beltran return when the facts are so firmly against it. “Call me when you’re ready” is how I would put it.  The end result of that situation Jeff Francoeur has become a more important part of the ballclub.

Francoeur, in my opinion, is the biggest disappointment on the 2010 Mets. After a good two and a half months last season where he hit over .300, the hope was that he found a balance between aggression and plate discipline. The first two weeks were promising, but Francoeur has reverted back to form after his first slump. The column about the “voices in his head” tells you all you need to know about why Francoeur will never live up to his potential. The problem is the Mets really need him to in order to compete.

I said repeatedly the Mets were a bat short even with Beltran. With the emergence of Angel Pagan and solid play from Ike Davis that may no longer be the case. Now that Beltran is nowhere close to returning they are again bat short, and probably two, if Francoeur doesn’t give you at least something between 2007 and last year.

Should we get excited about the four hits yesterday? Corey Hart‘s plodding defense helped Francoeur a ton his weekend. Hopefully he stops listening to all the “voices in his head” and keeps it simple. Thinking too much in sports is as bad as not thinking at all. If Francoeur doesn’t master the demons of plate discipline I am afraid the Mets need more than just another arm this July, but a bat as well. That’s provided Francoeur’s offense doesn’t sink them in the process.

Hard to call Francoeur a “disappointment” when he is performing almost exactly as would have been predicted.

Frenchy 2010 so far: .305 OBP, .392 SLG, .697 OPS
    Frenchy 2008-2009: .302 OBP, .391 SLG, .693 OPS

Most serious baseball analysts believed that Francoeur’s good numbers in his short stint with the Mets last season represented a small-sample illusion, and his reversion to form in 2010 thus far seems to confirm that.
