Profile of Potential Mets Draft Pick Zack Cox

By Mike Silva ~ May 30th, 2010. Filed under: Mike Silva, MLB Draft Coverage.

We all keep hearing the Mets are leaning towards taking Zack Cox of the University of Arkansas.

Cox has played third during his collegiate career, but recently made the transition to second. He appears to be a good hitter with average power, but the defense is suspect. One of the comps given was a young Ken Caminiti. The Mets already have a similar type of player in Reese Havens so I am curious why they would go this route with the #7 pick.

you never pick based on need in the MLB. you draft the best player available regardless of what you have in the system or at the MLB level.

If Cox is the best player at #7, you take him…

If Cox is the best player left at no. 7, then this is a weak draft. While I agree that you should take the best available talent, if the Mets pick Cox, it’s because he’ll sign for slot or less. I have to believe that there are going to be several more talented players than Cox left when the Mets make their selection. The fact is, in the amateur draft, the Mets go cheap. And after going over slot last year to sign their 2nd round pick, only to watch him blow out his elbow and need Tommy John surgery this year they will be even more reluctant to go over slot to sign a player. So, if Cox is their man it’s because they know they can sign him quickly and cheaply. We’ll just have to wait and see though.

Sorry, 86, the Mets being cheap in the draft doesn’t make sense with this pick. First off, Keith Law has Cox rated #6, and BA has him 7th. So, the Mets wouldn’t be reaching by picking Cox.
Secondly, Cox is the last player the Mets would take if they are trying to be cheap. As a draft eligible sophomore, Cox has much more leverage than the average college player. MLB trade rumors stated that he will be probably required going over slot to sign.

Its just a case of Cox being the best player.
