Joba: “Bullpen Fits My Personality”

By Mike Silva ~ May 23rd, 2010. Filed under: Mike Silva, New York Yankees.

Kim Jones did an interesting interview with Joba Chamberlain on WFAN last night. Joba talked about his season, throwing the curveball, Mariano, and his thoughts bullpen vs. starting.

The interesting quote from Joba is how he said his personality fits the bullpen. “You get the phone call and you’re up. Its high energy, high stress it’s kind of the way I live my life and play this game.”

In talking with baseball people Joba hasn’t really stated a preference for either the rotation or the bullpen in the past. It was clear over the last three plus seasons where he is most comfortable. I have to give Joba credit for an honest interview with Kim Jones. This was one of the better current athlete interviews I have heard in a while. I suggest all Yankees fans take a listen.

By the way, Kim Jones did a great interview. Some of the other hosts on the station should call her up and take some lessons on how to ask an athlete good questions that generate quality discussion. This is what happens when you are educated about the person/topic.

  1. Steve S.

This was going to be my morning post, but I couldn’t find the auto-generated transcript. He also said that “he tends to dwell on things” as a Starter, but in relief he likes that he gets right back out there.

In any case, the whole Joba/bullpen debate appears to be over. There have always been questions about his conditioning, his ability to maintain his stuff long term, he doesn’t throw as many strikes as Hughes does and now he seems to like it better as well. He’s a reliever, and will take over for Mo someday as long as he stays healthy and productive.
