Buzz Bissinger Hates Jerry Manuel, but Loves Mets Blogs

By Mike Silva ~ May 20th, 2010. Filed under: Mike Silva.

Deadspin chronicled the recent Twitter meltdowns of Pulitzer Prize winning author Buzz Bissinger. I have been talking to Buzz for a couple of weeks on twitter, as my conversations started about how it’s management, not the readers or writers, who are responsible for destroying traditional media. While they play politics, garner big salaries, and act important their franchises bleed money and lack the one thing that could turn it around: interesting content. Of course Buzz had this to say about my theory:

@NYBD Did suits make mistake in not taking net seriously? You bet. Got killed by Craig’s List. But that still does not explain reader exodus

@NYBD Stick to pitch counts and abuse points and all your other compulsive junk. Have many friends who may lose jobs. Must make you happy.

@NYBD in hindsight never should have given it away for free. But people don’t read anymore unless it’s a tweet. MBA? Hofstra? Wow…

@NYBD so where do you think all the readers went in five years? To blogs like yours? Newspapers made a fatal content mistake with web…

@NYBD how many blogs make any real money? Newspapers are not responsible that people would rather watch the jersey shore. Stick to the Mets.

@NYBD you know nothing. Do you know how much profit papers made up until five years ago. They still generate enormous cash.

Obviously Buzz doesn’t read NYBD as he would know I am not a strict interpreter of Pitcher Abuse Points and challenge advanced metrics all the time. Also, my MBA didn’t live up to his standards (I didn’t go to Hofstra not sure where he got that). Also, where is that enormous cash at Newsweek that has lost millions? Ah, well, what do I know I don’t have a journalism degree and couldn’t be expected to understand the wild world of media.

As for Jerry Manuel, Buzz asked me this question about the Mets manager:

@NYBD when is Jerry Manuel getting fired? Talk about a douche juice. Makes me weepy for Willie…Not.

He followed it up with this yesterday:

@buzzbissinger I like the Phillies blogs. I like the NYMets blogger. Like the Knicks Blog. Motor sports? Bunch of reactionary toothless southern crackers.

Hey, I am not here to bash Buzz, just pass along a unique line of thinking from a Pulitzer Prize winning author. He did a good job on The Knicks Blog radio last week talking about his thoughts on Lebron James, who he wrote a book about recently. Also, Friday Night Lights might be one of my favorite all time books and films. The man has a great resume you can’t deny that. He just can’t handle social media and blogs and these meltdowns have become an almost daily occurrence.

Why do you think Buzz called Jerry Manuel a “douche juice?” Is it because of his abuse of the bullpen, specifically Fernando Nieve? Nah, can’t be because as you saw he doesn’t like Pitcher Abuse Points. Whatever it is, Buzz Bissinger has joined the ranks and called for Manuel’s head.

Hey, there is one thing both Buzz and I agree with and that is who the “know it all Ivy League” has done a good job destroying Corporate America. Here was one final thought from Mr. Bissinger:

@NYBD I agree…Harvard and Wharton the evil empire…

Well, maybe they aren’t that bad!

This brings up an interesting question, why have none of the newspapers tried to beat Craigslist at their own game? The NY Times would kick their ass if they did free personal ads? I think they would.

The newspaper industry as a whole seems to act like it is afraid of what the internet might do to it instead of just embracing it.

Tell Buzz the exodus of readers never occurred – they were never there to begin with – Newspapers audiences were coupon clippers, crossword puzzle addicts and people looking for movie listings. People reading Buzz’ brilliance numbered in the low thousands, the same number that migrated to blogs.
