Vazquez Shopped, Millwood and Mets, Johnson’s Durability

By Frank Russo ~ May 11th, 2010. Filed under: Rumor Mill.

On Monday afternoon I spoke with my main Yankees source down in Tampa, who informed me that the team has already received inquiries from several NL teams in regards to the availability of Javy Vazquez. Although we were not giving the names of any specific teams, rumor has it that Atlanta has shown some interest in reacquiring Vazquez, who has struggled mightily upon his return to New York. Vazquez’s rough start has fueled speculation that Brian Cashman might eventually start shopping his struggling right hander.

We were also told that Orioles pitcher Kevin Millwood will be on the block sooner, rather than later, and that the Mets might be one of the teams that will show interest in him. If Ollie Perez continues to struggle, it would make a lot of sense for Omar Minaya to shore up his rotation by swinging a deal for a veteran presence like Millwood.

Passing Thoughts
We were told that Curtis Granderson’s rehab is going well, and he could make a return sooner than expected.

Got a wonderful response from a good friend of mine, a National League Assistant GM, in regards to Nick Johnson going on the DL:

“It was a really risky move by Cashman.”Johnson is about as sturdy as a cupcake. He could hurt himself going to the bathroom. I don’t care what people say about his on-base percentage. You can’t get on base if you’re always on the DL”.

I’m sure teams are inquiring on Javy. Why not? Buy low while you can. If for some reason Javy doesn’t get it turned around by the end of July Frank, do the yankees have interest in someone like Oswalt? He is pitching really well so far. His ERA is 2.63 and is striking just about a batter per inning with a good K/BB ratio. I think given his skill sets as a pitcher (i.e. K/BB ratio), I think he would be fine in the AL east.

I think the Yanks should def get what they can for Vasquez. Vasquez doesn’t seem to be able to produce at all in Yankee Stadium like he did in Atlanta. It just makes sense.

  4. Scafeets

Bring up Hirsh or Nova. They’re both pitching better than Javy.

I would like to see how Javy dose tonight then I would think about trading him to the Mets for Jon Nise and Danile Murphy! I would also want to pick up Chiming Wang from the Natonals off waviers.
