Livan Hernandez: Fact or Fiction?

By Mike Silva ~ April 29th, 2010. Filed under: Mike Silva, New York Mets.

This is Livan Hernandez’s line so far:

W: 3

L: 1

ERA: 0.87

WHIP: 0.87

1 Shutout

ERA+: 499

For the advance metric fans in the audience his FIP is 4.08 so I am guessing it’s only a matter of time before he comes back down to earth – right?

Could it be possible that Hernandez has a better year than John Maine and Oliver Perez? Would he have been a better 5th starter option than either?

We clearly are living in an alternate universe.

A major factor why Hernandez began to struggle to get big league hitters out from mid-June to mid-July for the Mets was that he was over-worked. Granted, he is a formidable fifth starter when your one thru four starters is Tom Seaver, Dwight Gooden, Ron Darling, and Rick Reed.

Hernandez may be having a good start to this year but eventually he will breakdown from pitching every fifth day. He needs rest at this stage in his career. Plus, I think the Nationals will release him as the NL East begins to balance itself out, Nats hitting bottom. The rabid (I say that loosely) fans of Capitol City will have no other option but to request the hard-throwing phenom Steven Strasberg.
