Give Chris Carter His Chance

By Mike Silva ~ March 31st, 2010. Filed under: Mike Silva, New York Mets.

I am not about to call Daniel Murphy “Wally Pipp,” but there is irony in the fact that, days before Chris Carter would be likely sent down, Murphy injures his MCL. We all know what Mike Jacobs can do, and yes he is an adequate replacement at first, but Chris Carter might be able to do more.

You all have heard about the minor league splits (.890 OPS). The guy can hit for power, average, and get on base. Will this translate to the big leagues? According to the Minor League Equivalency Calculator, no (he profiles like Mike Jacobs), but that doesn’t account for hunger and intensity. Those intangibles can be the difference.

As for defense, it’s not like Carter is replacing a gold glove at first. Fernando Tatis can be the late inning defensive replacement. All reports this spring indicate Carter is no better or worse than anyone else.

Just a couple of weeks ago it appeared Chris Carter was the 26th man, perhaps this is the break he needs. If his minor league numbers indicate the kind of production he is capable it’s worth a try.

    I couldn’t agree more.

It’s pretty obvious Carter deserves at least a shot at 1B. But, no Omar and Jerry will mess this up like they do everything else and Jacobs will rake to the tune of a 300 OBP for us. So sad how far this franchise has fallen since the days of Cashen and Davey. That last sentence is also referring to your last post about the anonymous source, Mike.

How many home runs does he need to hit to crack this anemic lineup?

I cannot handle more disappointment than the last few years – bring Carter up and give him a chance.

I agree that Carter should be the choice over Jacobs. Actually, a case could be made that Carter should have been the choice over Murpphy and Jacobs based on spring training performance but that is irrevelant now.

So much of this makes no sense …. for example, why is Tatis even on the team? Shouldn’t it be Jacobs backing up Carter?

We are now 4 days from Opening Day and this roster is a mess. They have already altered their starting rotation and have not decided on a bullpen as they are still auditioning people.

Maybe 75 wins and a solidly entrenced in 4th place …. I just hope that the post-Minaya and post-Manuel Mets become relevant again.

Maybe it’s just because it’s NY, but jeez, the negativity is amazing… I didn’t know the Mets already lost 80 games and fired Jerry and Omar by April 1st. I don’t have my head in the sand about this year, but at least give this squad a chance to play down to your expectations before you throw in the towel. That’s why they play the games, gentlemen.

As for Carter, thanks to Murphy, he’ll make the team and then it’s up to him to force his way into the lineup (or Jacobs to K his way out of it I guess). Let’s not go batsh-t over a 28-year-old and a handful of exhibition games just yet. When he’s hitting .400 as a reserve and Jacobs isn’t batting his weight, then you can fire up the whining.
