Pedro and Mets Reunion?

By Mike Silva ~ March 28th, 2010. Filed under: Mike Silva, Rumor Mill.

Steve Popper of the Bergen Record threw out something interesting today via twitter:

Told to me: IF Mets are in contention – don’t rule out Pedro return.

When I asked him to clarify Steve went on to say “it’s a big if and a long way off.”

I was at Pedro’s appearance on “Joe Buck Live” this last December. He indicated during the show he wanted to pitch and full season and could make 35 starts. No team was willing to give Pedro the financial incentive to sign, so it’s likely he will again be a midseason pickup for a contender.

Is Pedro worth looking into later this season? His control was as good as ever, averaging 1.6 walks per nine innings, the lowest since 2002. His strikeout rate, although nowhere near vintage Pedro, was a 7.5 per nine innings. The bottom line is he still can miss bats. I watched him throughout the playoffs and except for Game 6 of the World Series (a game he was ill) he seemed to know how to navigate top big league lineups.

The Mets first need to get into contention before considering something like this, but it sounds like they are keeping the lines of communication open with the former Cy Young winner. Maybe Pedro can get a proper sendoff to his Mets career, unlike 2008 where he left after the Cubs battered him on a rainy night at Shea.

The whole Pedro argument is so tired already. If Pedro really wanted to pitch, and I don’t mean come into the middle of the season to a bona fide contender where he doesn’t have to do much but “show up,” he’d be signed already. The Mets need no more cancers and “me-first” guys on the team anymore.

I think Pedro would come here to start the season, but only for the right $$$ and I think the Mets want to see what they have first. It could be a combination of both sides, but I think Pedro was not a cancer in the clubhouse IMO. If anything Delgado was more divisive.

With all due respect, if it’s not happening to start the season and it’s “a long way off” according to certain conditions, there’s not much of a story here…

Theres no discussion here, pedro will only come back to play on a contender. Clearly the mets are not even close to Philly or Atlanta or even Florida. Sign Pedro to maybe fight off Washington from dropping us into the cellar!

It’s not certain, tampamike, that with slightly better luck and fewer injuries, they can’t at least contend with Atlanta and Florida…but that’s why the games are played!

I agree with you Stu, injuries and luck play a huge role for every team. But the more and more I look at this pitching staff, this is 1977 all over again, Santana reminds me of Tom terrific! We had Seaver and the rest of the staff was garbage. Santana will be terrific and the rest is garbage. I,m as big a mets fan as they come, but are starting rotation after 57 couldn’t start for the nationals.

    The rotation in ’77 may have been better – Koosman was coming off ’76 numbers of 21-10, 2.69, Matlack 17-10, 2.95, and even Swan – 6-9, 3.54 – wasn’t terrible…

We have to hope that Maine, Pelfrey, and Perez perform at levels closer to what they did in 2006-08…
