Gaudin Can Be Valuable to the Mets

By Mike Silva ~ March 25th, 2010. Filed under: Mike Silva, New York Mets.

There are rumors of the Mets having interest in former Yankees pitcher Chad Gaudin. In reaching out to NYBD contributor Frank Russo, he told me there were some concerns around the Yankees that Gaudin’s health may not have been 100%. Of course, that is unconfirmed and we have to assume the any team that signs Gaudin would be confident in his durability.

Gaudin has been terrible this spring pitching to an 8.68 ERA, however he would be a nice pickup for the Mets in terms of depth. Right now the Mets are going to need as much depth as possible due to the shaky springs from both John Maine and Oliver Perez. As you probably know, Gaudin has a ton of experience both as a starter and reliever, actually pitching to just a 4.00 ERA out of the bullpen. He has a decent strikeout rate as well averaging about 7 per nine innings. He was a savior to the Yankees down the stretch last year putting up an ERA+ of 121. Gaudin is still young as he just turned 27 yesterday.

As Howard pointed out earlier the bullpen is already crowded, so where would he fit? I am thinking a minor league deal and starting the season in Buffalo. I have a suspicion the Mets interest in him is tied to Nelson Figueroa. Personally, I believe Figueroa is headed to Japan, which is unfortunate, and the Mets view Gaudin as his replacement. I would prefer to keep Figueroa, but, if healthy, Gaudin can certainly be an adequate replacement as he is a similar pitcher and much younger.

Gaudin? Figueroa? This is a tem with one of the highest payrolls? Unbelievable!

Gaudin is much younger? What does that mean? Are we signing him to a long-term contract? Figueroa has a 0.00 ERA. Top that!

wow what a whiner that first guy is. Gaudin was on the yankees (wonder if their fans were complaining about payroll too) and figueroa has at times been a huge lift for this team and is having an excellent spring (jamie moyer anyone)?
