The 26th Man

By Mike Silva ~ March 22nd, 2010. Filed under: Mike Silva, New York Mets.

I don’t think there is more Chris Carter can do this spring. Even though his 3 hits against Michigan didn’t count in the spring tally, Carter is still slugging over 1.000, hitting .385, with 3 homers and 8 RBI. Despite all that there seems to be little chance he comes north with the club.

Carter is tough case to evaluate. His career minor league numbers are very solid, but he has yet to stick with a big league ballclub. Arizona gave up on him in 2007, trading him to the worst possible destination, Boston, where he profiled as a DH behind David Ortiz. They always say if you hit a team will find a position for you, but in a game that is turning more towards defense and runs saved I would have to disagree with that old adage.

First base makes so much sense. Daniel Murphy isn’t hitting and Carter has the ability to get on base, something that has not historically been a strength of Mike Jacobs. Amazing how a career minor leaguer with an OPS of .890 is not able to get a spot on a big league team.

The Yankees claiming Carter on waivers last season really hurt him. The Mets didn’t get a chance to see him the last month to see how he would fit or possibly increase his value in a trade. I don’t see much of a future for Carter in the National League, which is a shame because the Mets could use a hitter just like him.

Carter truly has become the ultimate 26th man in baseball.
