Read the Quote: Joba Wants to Close

By Mike Silva ~ March 21st, 2010. Filed under: Mike Silva, New York Yankees.

Pat Borzi of the NY Times caught up with Mariano Rivera a couple of days ago. In the article he mentions how Joba Chamberlain was chatting up Rivera and telling him “You’ve got to pass the torch, four-two,” which Rivera responded by saying “your time will come.”

According to Borzi Chamberlain answered back, “You might be 50! I might be done by then.” Rivera, ignoring the last part, responded, “Then it’ll still come,” with an equally big smile. That did not make Chamberlain feel any better. “He might pitch until he’s 106,” he said.

The main focus of the story was on Rivera, but the exchange with Chamberlain made an impression on me. Maybe it’s just a playful exchange. Perhaps it’s something more.

Joba has always looked like a fish out of water in the rotation. In the bullpen he is in his element. His personality fits the short spurt perfectly. No thinking, just pure adrenaline and throw.

Maybe I am looking too deep into the exchange. Maybe Joba was just kidding around with Rivera. I also know many a truth is said in jest.
