The Yankees are not going to be able to trade for Mauer. Remember how much Minnesota wanted for Santana, and how little the Mets got him for?

That being said, if Mauer becomes a free agent, I expect the Yankees to go after him hard – and probably get him.

Madden’s a professional and I have no basis on which to assume he’s crossed any ethical lines, but I find it curious that the scout was not named, and Madden didn’t say that the scout asked that his name not be used…it’s not even clear when the scout said this; it may not have been during the conversation described in the column…

But I seriously doubt that the Twins will let Mauer get away…

I think the scout’s comments was really what stirred this up. I mean, the Yankees probably would go “all out” for Mauer if he was a free agent. The Sox too, so its not completely crazy. I find it ironic that many don’t think its enough of a package (Twins side)

On a slow news day in spring training, guys like Madden can’t resist making these things up to fill space and sell papers in New York. Just once, I’d like to not see a manufactured rumor about any and every elite player ending up on the Yankees.

Doesn’t anyone else get tired of this and see it for the BS that helps guys like Bill Madden make a living when there’s not much real news to report?

you must be smokin somethin really good if you think the yankees chave the best package..ellsbury,70 steals.300,casey kelly,bucholtz,..joba is overated,hughes does look solid,and montero is unproven,even though ive heard great things,ellsbury is better than anyone there,and bucholtz already has a no hitter.

Actually this makes no sense for the Twins. They already have more pitchers than they have room for and Chamberlain and Hughes are just aging prospects at this point whose performance, like most other New York ventures, hasn’t lived up to their hype. Mauer deserves a better team than the Yankees with its host of fading prima donas.

As for those “AAAA” prospects the Twins got for Santana. One of them, Carlos Gomez, will be the starting center fielder for Milwaukee and JJ Hardy, the return on Gomez, will be the Twins starting shortstop. Another of those AAAA guys, Kevin Mulvey, was traded for Jon Rauch who probably pushed the Twins into the playoffs last year and is a leading candidate to be the Twins closer unless Nathan miraculously recovers. Not a bad return for a single season of Santana, which is all they gave up.
