Strat-O-Matic and NYBD Partnership

By Mike Silva ~ March 10th, 2010. Filed under: Announcements, Strat-O-Matic.

As I announced yesterday at our Twitter account NYBD Radio has entered into a partnership with Strat-O-Matic.

This is an exciting announcement for me personally since I have been playing SOM for over 20 years. I always tell the story how I got introduced to Strat-O-Matic baseball. When I was a kid I would play wiffle ball in my backyard and pretend to be various players. I always yearned for a simulation that would allow me to replay a season with the most accuracy. While reading a 1987 Mets yearbook I stumbled across a Lenny Dykstra quote after his game winning home run in the 86′ NLCS. It went something like “the last game winning home run I hit was in Strat-O-Matic against my brother. There was my answer! A few months later I got my first game for Christmas (1987 season) and I have been playing ever since.

Today the game is still cards and dice, but there is a computer version as well. I can attest to the accuracy as this game is what I would call the thinking fans video game. For fantasy baseball fans there is the Sporting News version which is tons of fun as well. Although time is limited in adulthood I have been able to play tournaments, have some simulations on NYBD and complete replays of the 1997 and 1998 seasons in recent years. What does this partnership mean for you? Well, I would like to have some interaction with current, and hopefully, new SOM fans. We will be giving away prizes, interviewing the founder, Hal Richman, on WGBB and doing various simulations throughout the season. One in particular you, the fan, will be able to select the starting lineup.

Stay tuned for more details, but why don’t you check out their website and get a feel for this great game and company?

Very rarely do you get to endorse something that you 100% believe in. I can guarantee any baseball fan will love Strat-O-Matic and be impressed with their family of products.

Feel free to share your own Strat-O-Matic story in the comments section of this post.

Mike, considering playing the Sporting News version myself. How does it compare with the standard Strat computer game? Thanks for posting this!

    Mike,

I played the board game as a kid and used to compile all statistics myself for my Mets replays.

Now I have the computer version on my laptop (the only important thing on there).

I replayed the 2000 World Series and sure enough, the Yanks won in 5 (close games) with Armando blowing a save and Bernie raking the mets over the coals. Talk about realism…..

I’m doing a replay of the 1966 L.A. Dodgers with Koufax, Drysdale, Osteen & Sutton. They’re 15 games over at the 100 game mark but the Giants are hot and hold a 7 game lead.

My next project is the 1976 Mets replay season (Seaver’s last full year) with Matlack, Koosman & Lolich. How many homers can Kingman hit? Can they throw a monkey wrench into the Big Red Machine? Time will tell.

The Sporting News Version, in my opinion, is the same statistical engine, but more in a fantasy sports format. Instead of doing the in game decisions you create a team, set lineups, more like a fantasy game. I think its a matter of preference and what type of game you are more interested in playing. Hope this helps.

Haven’t played 2000, but the Mets collapsed down the stretch in 98′ during my replay and actually made the playoffs in 97. Got swept in 3 games by the Astros in the playoffs. The Indians profile very well, actually making back to back World Series and beating the 98′ Yankees. They have a ton of offense as well. The Braves are very good as well.

Keep me in the loop with your projects.
