Rumblings: Aceves, Budget, Damon, Newman

By Mike Silva ~ March 9th, 2010. Filed under: New York Yankees, Rumor Mill.

NYBD contributor Frank Russo reached out to his Tampa connections and passed me along some interesting tidbits:

- There is actually a competition for the #5 spot and Alfredo Aceves has made a great impression on the Yankees brass. What does this mean for Phil Hughes and Joba Chamberlain? Both would go to the bullpen, which is essentially what Dave Eiland said as well. Again, way too early to make any definitive statements, but we were told that Aceves to the rotation is not the long shot that everyone may think. Forget about the Joba/Hughes debate for a second and check out this bullpen: Hughes, Joba, Marte, Rivera, Logan, Robertson (or one of Gaudin/Mitre) and Park. Wow!

- The feeling around the Yankees is the “budget talk” was more for Johnny Damon and not the hard line that has been made out publicly. Cashman and company are that annoyed with how Boras and Damon handled the negotiations.

- Sources do not believe that Mark Newman’s DUI will cause him to lose his position with the organization.
