Thole Example of Hard Work

By Mike Silva ~ March 4th, 2010. Filed under: Mets Minors.

We always talk about players and their “tools” and ignore the intangibles that make up a big leaguer. This Sunday we will have Mike Hart, former hitting coach for the Savannah Sand Gants and St. Lucie Mets, on the radio.

Mike was kind enough to give us some thoughts on Josh Thole, who very likely will start the season in Buffalo. He spent time with Thole in 2007 and 2008. He told us that many in the organization were surprised by Thole’s offensive numbers. From a tools standpoint he grades out below average on a major league scale.

According to Hart, “Thole is an example of how dedication and determination can go a long way in improving one’s skills. As far as Josh Thole’s ceiling….I believe it will depend on opportunity. If given the opportunity, I think Josh Thole could surprise a lot of non believers.”

Hart was also quick to point out that it wasn’t that long ago Thole was a backup catcher in “A” ball. Now he is on the cusp of the major leagues having got a cup of coffee last September.

Ask fellow NYBD contributor Jed Weisberger about Thole and he immediately talks about intangibles and grit. This is definitely the kind of player you want develop in your system.

The fact remains the Mets were willing to give Bengie Molina a vested option and signed Rod Barajas to a deal this year. They didn’t trust Thole to handle the pitching staff, especially since their other options if he failed were Omir Santos and Henry Blanco.

I look forward to speaking with Mike this Sunday about other prospects he had a chance to work with during his time in the Mets organization.

When I see Thole I get the feeling that he will be similar to Jason Kendall from an offensive standpoint …. defensively, it’s anyone’s guess …. hopefully he grows into an acceptable defensice catcher who has a high OBP albeit with minimal power.

A catcher with a high OBP either makes a great #2 hitter (i.e., Paul LoDuca) or a great #8 hitter which could serve to extend the lineup ….. I am hoping this kid really does grow into the position.
