Cashman Talks Hughes and Joba in the Bullpen

By Mike Silva ~ March 4th, 2010. Filed under: Mike Silva, New York Yankees.

Brian Cashman was on with Mike Francesa yesterday in a must listen interview for Yankees fans. Of course, the topic of the fifth spot came up and Cashman talked about the need to balance the team needs with the future development of Joba Chamberlain and Phil Hughes.

One thing is for sure, Cashman doesn’t show his hand (as Frank Russo has mentioned before on this site), he made it seem like Aceves, Gaudin, Mitre, Hughes and Chamberlain are all on equal ground for the fifth spot. He made great points why one of Aceves, Gaudin or Mitre in the five hole, along with Hughes and Chamberlain in the bullpen, would be the best 2010 Yankees pitching staff. Of course, Cash was quick to point out that might not be in the best interest for the kids who the organization views as starting pitchers.

I am just speculating here, but I still think there is a real possibility that Hughes can be sent to AAA to work on his repertoire. This assuming that Chamberlain pitches well this spring and earns the five hole. The Yankees bullpen is stacked and it’s not necessary for Hughes to be there in order for the Yankees to win. You assume they will get length out of the rotation on four out of five nights as well.

In a boring camp this positional battle is shaping up to be very interesting. The fact that Cashman even brought up Hughes and Joba in the pen on the radio makes for another fun conversation, albeit a long shot scenario.

Imagine a pen of Park, Hughes, Chamberlain, Robertson, Marte, and Rivera. Wow! Light out.

For those worried about Aceves, Gaudin or Mitre in the rotation, remember that Chamberlain put up a very unimpressive ERA+ of 94 last year, so none of those guys have big shoes to fill. Most teams would be very happy with Aceves as a #3, much less as their fifth starter.

I thought for sure it would be Hughes in the rotation and Joba in the bullpen coming into the spring, but now I am not so sure. Cashman has me thinking that Hughes development may be best served at AAA this season. That way you can have both as starters from day one in 2011.

Any thoughts?

  1. Phil in Lehigh Valley

I believe Chamberlain, Hughes and Gaudin are fighting for the 5th spot. I would be surprised if Mitre makes this team. I have a feeling Aceves is not going to be as effective this year. It is just a hunch.
