Listen: Rico Brogna

By Mike Silva ~ February 22nd, 2010. Filed under: Mets Alumni, Mets Audio.

Last night former Mets 1B Rico Brogna joined me in the latest “Mets Alumni” report.

Rico played for the Mets from 1994-1996 and was traded to the Phillies in order to clear room for John Olerud.

He made a splash during the 94′ season hitting .351 after being called up in July. During that time he had a five hit game, displaced David Segui at first, and broke up an Andy Benes no-hitter. The following year he was the Mets best offensive player hitting .289 with 22 HR’s and 76 RBI. Concern about spinal arthritis forced the Mets to trade him to Philadelphia in the offseason of 1996. For three plus years Rico would average about 20 homers and over 90 RBI down in Philly.

Since his retirement Rico has been active coaching college football, high school basketball, and scouting for the Arizona Diamondbacks. This year he will take over their AA Mobile club for his first professional baseball managerial position.

Hear me talk to Rico about his time in New York, what he learned from the managers he played for, the importance of defense at first, and how important scouting was in preparing him for his first pro job.
