Carton’s Crass Act and Other Radio News

By Mike Silva ~ February 3rd, 2010. Filed under: Mike Silva, Sports Media Commentary.

Jets coach Rex Ryan has been lambasted all over the news for his offensive gesture. Mike Francesa was particularly vociferous on this topic during his Monday show, going as far to say that, if it happens again, Ryan could be fired. My question to WFAN, specifically Operations Manager Mark Chernoff (warning offensive content), is how does this picture of Craig Carton make you feel? Carton is doing his best impersonation of Ryan down in Miami on radio row. I am personally demanding an apology by the station for Carton’s action, believe he should be fired, and want Francesa to apologize on his #1 rated show. The Mets should be embarrassed how their station allows its employees to behave this way. What’s good for the goose is good for the gander- right?

I found some interesting radio notes:

- Sid Rosenberg will return to the airwaves of WFAN  this Saturday from 1 to 4pm. Neil Best has all the details over at Watchdog, including a quote from our favorite empty suit radio executive Mark Chernoff. Wonder if the good will is because Sid is coming out with a new book? Probably it has more to do with their sagging ratings. No doubt Sid’s return will give them a boost. It’s a disgrace that Carton works at WFAN, but not Sid. You can check out Sid’s redesigned website, including his new Shovio Videocasts, here.

- The ultimate “mush”, Chris “Mad Dog” Russo”, made his Super Bowl picks. Apparently Colts over Saints, 31-20 – giving 5.5. Is it too late for those that placed a bet to change it? I would.

- Sal Licata is doing a video journal of his Super Bowl trip with Eddie Erickson. I like both these guys because, regardless if they agree with me, they will always take time to respond. They will defend FAN and Francesa to the hilt (can’t blame them, they know where their bread is buttered), but I respect that nonetheless. Do you get the feeling, watching this video, that Eddie might be tired of rooming with Licata? Sal also is doing Super Bowl picks, which you might want to more seriously than mush Russo.

    1. I agree that Carton should be disciplined for his actions.
    2. I think he should be fired.
2a. Not because of his actions; because he just sucks.
    3. Mike Francesca should have to apologize for his own brand of douchebaggery, before he apologizes for anyone else.

PS. Love the fact that you call WFAN the Mets station. Nice touch.

Why a listening audience is fascinated by such a (perverted) self-absorbed, pompous, insufferably dominating blow-hard (Carton) is a mystery to me!
