Damon Would Be Wise to Accept Yanks Latest Offer

In a not so surprising turn of events, Jon Heyman of SI reports that Johnny Damon would have the weekend to take a low deal with the Yankees (around $5 million base). If he declines, the Yanks will sign one from the group of Reed Johnson, Xavier Nady, Randy Winn, Jim Edmonds, and Jermaine Dye.

NYBD contributor Frank Russo reported that a deal between the Yanks and Damon was still a possibility over a week ago. As a matter of fact, Frank’s source thought a deal could be reached for the exact same terms (low base of about $5-6 million).

Damon should look at how former teammate Bobby Abreu took the Angels one year deal, had a great season, and turned it into a 2 year plus vesting option extension. I can see a similar scenario happen next season if Damon puts up another solid campaign.

For the record, Brian Cashman denied the “deadline”, but never said he wasn’t interested in Damon’s services. Read the entire piece and his quote about certain people “waking up and smelling the coffee” appears to be directed at Scott Boras. This is a classic GM/Agent “cat and mouse” game.

The sake of both parties a deal should get done. It just makes too much sense.
