Pineiro, Molina, Delgado “Absolutely Realistic Scenario”

By Mike Silva ~ January 11th, 2010. Filed under: Mike Silva, Offseason Speculation.

NYBD contributor Joe Demayo had this to say on twitter yesterday:

joe_demayo Asked if signing Joel Pineiro,Carlos Delgado,Bengie Molina is a realistic scenario for #mets and was told “definitely”

We discussed all three players in a rumor mill from last week. If these are the three remaining “big” acquisitions I would be happy with the Mets offseason. Of course, I would like to see them complement it with a right handed hitting bench bat (Ryan Garko?), and a second lefty out of the bullpen (Jay Marshall does not count).

Last night, Howard did caution me on Delgado, as he has yet to play the field. With less than 40 days to spring training is it realistic to get a grasp on his fielding and mobility? Scouts were sent down to Puerto Rico this weekend, but we have yet to hear any reports outside of his offense, which appears fine.

The one thing the Mets have going for them is some young depth. Jonathan Niese clearly can fill in if a starter goes down, Ike Davis has done nothing but hit since May of last year, and the 40 man roster has decent subs like Shawn Bowman, Angel Pagan, Josh Thole, and Anderson Hernandez. This should prevent the Mets from scrambling to find replacements in the event of an injury, which as a huge problem in 2009.

The trio of Molina, Delgado, and Pineiro won’t win a title by themselves, but it’s a decent way to round out the roster. In the end, it’s up to the core of Wright, Reyes, Bay, and Beltran to carry this team offensively.

Would Mets fans be happy with those three acquisitions? I will let you voice your opinion on that.

Here me talk about the latest Mets Hot Stove news during the second half our of NYBD Radio which you can download here.

I would like those 3.But what scares me is how slow the team would be?? Molina-Delgado batting 6th and 8th??They are 2 of the slowest in any sport.

I’d be quite happy with those three acquisitions – particularly Delgado. The team desperately needs a left handed power bat to balance out the line-up, deepen the line-up and Delgado would be the perfect # 6 hitter to protet both Bay and Beltran. Defense is a concern with Delgado but I really think his presence alone in the line-up makes up for any defensive deficiencies.

You could bump Molina down to #7 and then Castillo hitting eighth for the sole reason that I don’t believe you can have the pitcher bunt Molina over from first to second and not have Molina thrown out.

    Reyes
Franceour (he’ll get a ton of fastballs)
    Wright
    Beltran
    Bay
    Delgado
    Molina
    Castillo

    is a very formidable line-up.

I just don’t see, after the past 2 seasons with injuries, Delgado playing anything close to a full season. Add to that his uncertain fitness on the field and slow speed and I think we’re looking at a liability that will cost us games, and we can’t afford that. Carlos would serve as a DH better and as Mike Silva noted, the Orioles are having a look. I say Piniero and Molina are a good deal if terms can be agreed to and we should give Murphy at least 1/2 a season with others batting around him to show that 12 HR’s was merely a sign of things to come. If he doesn’t pan out, then we make a move. No more dead weight on the roster, sorry Carlos, the Mets do that too often.

I like all three with Murphy getting alot of playing time keeping Delgado fresh and put Garko in the mix for tough lefties.

I’d like Delgado, Pedro, Smoltz and a deal for Pudge

The Mets need a pitcher and another pitcher and another pitcher before you even care what they do with catcher and first base. How about Ben Sheets and Pinero, Garland or Washburn. Start spring with six starters. Its a pretty sure bet that someone will get hurt or be ineffective. Then get an established relieve like a Beimel. It may be a good idea to get a guy like Dotel with closing experience just in case you need someone to close for a few week.
