Bring Cone Back Where He Belongs

Yesterday Bob Klapisch reported the working relationship between David Cone and the YES Network may be over. I agree with James Kannengieser of Amazin’ Avenue, who proposed that SNY consider bringing Cone into their broadcasting stable. It’s a great idea since Cone can do a combination of studio analysis, and sub in during one of Hernandez’s sabbaticals. Don’t forget that Ron Darling does TBS, so there may be an opportunity to plug him in on those days as well. The booth of Gary, Keith, and Ron is great, but I would like to see Cone with Hernandez or Darling for a few games and how his sense of humor/analytical side meshes with his former teammates. I was told some wild off the record stories about Coney during his time with the Mets. Let’s say one involved an airplane and streaking.

Cone is one of those rare players that had success with both the Mets and Yankees. Sure, Doc Gooden threw a no hitter in pinstripes, and Strawberry won three World Series, but they are always synonymous with the Mets. Cone is a bit different, as many fans think of him for his Yankees years since he threw the big Game 3 in 96′, the perfect game in 99′, and his 20 wins with the historical 98′ squad. In reality, Cone is just as much a Met as Strawberry and Gooden. His 88′ season might be the best for any Mets pitcher not named Seaver or Gooden. As a matter of fact, it was Cone, not Gooden, who probably was the ace of that 1988 division winning squad.

First, check out his lines for both sides of town:

Mets
W-81
L- 51
ERA – 3.13
GS – 169
K/9- 8.7
ERA+ – 112

Yankees
W – 64
L- 40
ERA – 3.91
GS – 144
K/9- 8.7
ERA+ – 118

Very similar lines for sure. From a team standpoint he did win four World Championships in the Bronx. In a twist of irony, Cone was able to get a huge out in Game 4 of the 2000 World Series as he got Mike Piazza to pop out.

The point being Cone is now a free agent on the broadcasting circuit and should be back with the Mets family. Adding his expertise, along with his connection to the team, would be a valuable asset to SNY.

I’d love Cone to come back home again. He was/is one of my all time Favorite pitchers whom I try to emulate when pitching (Mens league). It’s a shame that his career numbers aren’t HOF worthy, too me he’s one of the best pitchers of that era.

It broke my heart when the Mets had to trade him away and it was the only time losing one player disheartened me for following the Mets. (and I still love them and watch religiously even after 2006-2009)

Cone (along with Doc and Straw, my other favs as a youth) are big reasons why I didn’t hate the Spanks in the late 90′s.
