Who Is Yunieski Maya?

By Mike Silva ~ December 23rd, 2009. Filed under: Rumor Mill.

According to Globedia.com the Mets and White Sox are the front-runners to sign 27–year-old Cuban RHP Yuniesky Maya. We don’t know much about these foreign imports and, just like with Ryota Igarashi, information is hard to come by.

Matt Cerrone of Metsblog described Maya as “major-league ready, mature, and has a low-90s fastball with a decent change-up and slurve… he is known for being a bit of a bulldog, pitching inside, challenging hitters.”

According to the Baseball Reference Bullpen Maya Cuba’s top right-handed hurler in 2008-2009. If you read closely it appears Maya would be better suited out of the bullpen. It appears, rather than spend big money on relievers like Fernando Rodney, the Mets are trying to import more inexpensive foreign talent. I don’t have a problem with that, but the risk with pitchers like Igarashi and Maya is you have to hope your scouting on these players is stellar. You really don’t know what you have and for every El Duque success story there is an Alay Solar.

Why should we worry — with the Mets history of scouting and signing foreign players, I couldnlt be more confident. Heck, this is the organization that signed 13 Japanese players who never amounted to a hill of beans as Mets …. why worry?
