Is Boras Begging the Mets to Get In?

By Mike Silva ~ December 9th, 2009. Filed under: Offseason Speculation.

Despite Jon Heyman of SI reporting the Mets are looking to land one of the Jason Bay, Matt Holliday, and John Lackey trio, many in the media are skeptical about that assertion. Earlier today Scott Boras met with the media and had this to say this courtesy of Ben Shpigel of the NY Times:

Boras, unprompted, says Holliday has type of swing, power that translates well in big ballparks.

It doesn’t take a genius to see that Boras is trying to create a market for Holliday. Right now it’s St. Louis and maybe Boston. The Yankees, although I would never count them out completely, are focused on pitching. The Angels remain a possibility, but for Mike Scioscia to say they “more pressing needs” when asked about Jason Bay makes you wonder if they are serious suitors for one of the big bats.

I think the Mets will make a play for one the big three free agents, all of which won’t get nearly the lengthy contract they anticipated. If Holliday stays in the 5 year $20 million per year dollar range that is a good contract for an elite hitter in his prime. His performance in St. Louis doesn’t have me as concerned about his Home/Road splits. For those that do worry, do you think Andres Galarraga needed Coors Field to be an elite hitter? It sure helps, but good hitters will excel at their trade anywhere – including the moon.

Take this quick comparison:

Player A: 27 HRS, 107 RBI, and a .907 OPS

Player B: 29 HRS, 112 RBI, and a .933 OPS

Player A is an average David Wright season. Player B is Matt Holliday.

The Mets lineup is without the big bat of Carlos Delgado and Holliday almost becomes a necessity.

Thats factoring in David Wright’s low-power numbers from last year and also not showing that not only did coors field help, but batting along side Pujols did wonders aswell. His numbers in a not so great offensive atmosphere of Okaland were only just a bit above average. Not mention David Wright has played less years than Holliday so one bad season hurts alot more. Im not so sure adding another 20 million per is worth it.

I take back what i said about Wright having less seasons because the fact is they have played virtually the same amount of games. What i would like to add is that reviewing Holliday’s numbers, he may not get 20 homers and certianly wont get 25 homers next year if he is a Met. If he gets 20 million from us, then David Wright with a 2010 David Wright avg season as you have shown us will have to get the same if not more. Oh yeah, and Reyes and Francouer and Beltran’s contracts will all be up within the time that Holliday and Santana are making above 20.
