Mets Finally Embrace History at Citi Field

By Mike Silva ~ November 21st, 2009. Filed under: Mike Silva.

The Mets just announced their plans to address the lack of history at Citi Field. First they will rename areas of the ballpark after Tom Seaver, Casey Stengel, Gil Hodges, and Bill Shea. There will be a Hall of Fame committee which will have members of the media and team voting on future inductees into a new Mets Hall of Fame. Some members of the committee are Howie Rose, Gary Cohen, Marty Noble, Jay Horwitz, and former Mets pitcher Al Jackson. The Hall of Fame will be adjacent to the Jackie Robinson Rotunda and be accessible from both inside and outside the stadium. In addition the team will also decorate the stadium with colorful imagery of former players as well as the Mets signature logo.

This is great news, but I won’t hand out any praise until I see the final product in April. I will say I am encouraged by the fact ownership finally listened to fan feedback and worked quickly to address an obvious problem. Citi Field is a great stadium and should not have been left open to ridicule during its inaugural season. I hope Mets management has learned a lesson from 2009 and will be more proactive in the future. They still have a branding issue that needs fixing, but embracing team history is a great way to move things in the right direction. Now execute it and put a competitive team on the field in 2010.

Not only did ownership listen to fan feedback, but they aren’t selling out and naming sections after corporate sponsors. I guess they could always go with the “Pepsi Shea” section though…
