Agbayani to Retire

By Mike Silva ~ November 12th, 2009. Filed under: Japanese Baseball.

I noticed an interesting tidbit at NPB Tracker yesterday when reading up the Hideki Matsui situation. Patrick Newman goes down the list of foreign players on each Japanese roster and indicates their future in the Pacific. Former Met Benny Agbayani, who has spent the last six years in Japan, apparently will retire to a life of scouting. Although his MLB career never took off Agbayani was integral to the 1999-2000 Bobby V Mets. Who can forget his homer off Aaron Fultz to win Game 3 of the NLDS in 2000? I can’t since I froze in the upper deck of Shea Stadium that night.

Agbayani is 38 years old and I would guess a return to play in the States is out of the question. You can check out his stats with the Chibe Lotte Marines here. It appears his best season was 2004 where he hit 35 homers and drove in 100 runs. Looking back it’s amazing that Agbayani had an OPS around .880 during that two year run with the Mets. Do you realize that he was third on the team in that category in 2000? It’s amazing with that type of offense that Valentine brought them to the World Series. I am sure Cleveland and Washington will regret passing over Bobby V – unless it was the other way around.

one quick clarification — Benny moving into scouting was my own speculation. He is indeed done with Chiba Lotte though.

    Patrick

Do you know if Agbayani still has some life left in his bat? Independent Leagues? What about trying out for a big league club? Can he play the field?

I didn’t really see him too much this year, but he hasn’t really hit for power at all for the last few years. He’s basically been a 350ab guy who hits .270-.280 and controls the strike zone well enough to walk a bit. I don’t know about his fielding, but it seems like Bobby had better defensive options.

I guess he could get a spring training invite, but I would rather see a younger guy that’s been in 3A but never gotten a real shot get that chance (Matt Murton, Jeff Fiorentino, etc). Benny’s had a nice career though; he’s played in a World Series, won a Japan Series, and made some pretty good money at it.

The game winning home run in the playoffs was a day game, not a night game.
