Sox Interested in Matsui?

By Mike Silva ~ November 11th, 2009. Filed under: Rumor Mill.

Patrick Newman of the Japanese baseball website NPB Tracker discusses a story in Nikkan Sports regarding the Red Sox interest in Hideki Matsui. According to the insider, Matsui is considered as a viable alternative to Jason Bay. Obviously this is simply a rumor, but the Yankees and Red Sox have shown interest in each others players before.

I have my doubts about Matsui being a fit in Boston. Although he put a comparable offensive season statistically to Bay I can’t imagine him handling the Green Monster on an everyday basis. Also, I have confidence that Bay will continue to perform at his 2009 level for the next 3-4 years, but not necessarily Matsui. Also, Matsui would make the Sox extremely left handed with J.D. Drew and David Ortiz in the same lineup.

It’s clear after reading Brian Cashman’s interview with Chad Jennings of the Journal News that it’s very unlikely that both Johnny Damon and Matsui will return. Cashman points out that “Matsui and Damon on the roster means the Yankees would have to make a trade to bring in another bat.” Not a lot of versatility with both of those guys. I also think Scott Boras is pricing Damon too high with his four year deal. He will learn, but I will save that discussion for another time.

Our very own Frank Russo was told late in the season the Yankees want Damon back on a two year deal, but it sounds like Boras has other ideas. I predict the first to accept a reasonable 2 year deal might be the one that stays.
