Mets Interested in Pineiro and Edwin Jackson

By Mike Silva ~ November 10th, 2009. Filed under: Rumor Mill.

Two more names popped up on the rumor mill tonight: Joel Pineiro and Edwin Jackson.

I am not surprised hearing Pineiro’s name since I thought back in September the Mets would go that route versus upgrading to John Lackey. The word that Pineiro wants $30 million for 3 years should motivate the Mets to either get in the game for Lackey or trade for Halladay. Why spend $10 million on a “maybe” when you can go another $5 million on a stud? I wouldn’t mind Piniero on a 1-2 year deal in the $10 million range, but anything more than that and I would walk. Remember, this is a guy that was dumped by the Red Sox in 2007 and didn’t turn it around till this year. Hopefully his success against the Mets doesn’t fool management into thinking Piniero is a top line starter.

Edwin Jackson is a curious case. A former failed Dodgers prospect finally found his way in Tampa and was traded to Detroit for Matt Joyce. The deal backfired for Tampa because they could have used Jackson in their rotation this year. Jackson had a great first half, but struggled a great deal in August and September. Sounds like Detroit may not be able to afford him in next years budget.

If pitchers like Jackson and Pineiro come at a reasonable price I wouldn’t mind bring them in so the Mets could turn around and possibly trade Pelfrey, Maine, or Perez to fill some needs. However, I don’t either as any better then a #3, which you already have with the aforementioned trio. Bottom line: bring these guys in with the idea of using your current young arms in trades to bring in a legit #2.

  1. Ben

bad place to be for the mets

too cheap to go after high priced talent

terrible system so cant trade for it either

get ready for the c level talents of the world

  2. Brian

Trade Perez? What lunatic would take on that contract? $24 million over the next 2 years for one of the worst pitchers in baseball? A guy, who at this stage in his career still can’t command his pitches consistently. Why would another GM be interested in Maine either? The guy can’t stay healthy. Pelfry is a #4 starter at best, and trading him wouldn’t bring back any thing but less than his current mediocre value. All that being said, the Mets are in really bad shape, and Mr. Silva, I think you’re being naively optimistic about the pitchers I just mentioned…..
