Mets in 3 Way Talks for Overbay

By Mike Silva ~ November 9th, 2009. Filed under: Rumor Mill.

Ken Rosenthal is reporting the framework for a potential three way deal between the Mets, Cubs, and Blue Jays with Milton Bradley going to the Blue Jays, Luis Castillo to the Cubs, and Lyle Overbay to the Mets.

Overbay would be the perfect one year stopgap at first base. He only has one year left on his contract at $7 million and would also ride the Mets of Luis Castillo. I can see this type of deal paving the way for them to go after Orlando Hudson or possible trade for Dan Uggla. Personally I prefer Hudson because Uggla is an atrocious defensive player. Hudson is a three time gold glove winner although UZR indicates that he may have lost a step the last couple of years. Of course, dollars and length of contract could potentially sway my decision. I wouldn’t go more then two years for O-Dog under any circumstances.

Here is another thought, would Overbay force the Mets to switch Daniel Murphy to second base? I still think Murphy should be a super sub ala Kevin Mitchell on the 86′ team. Who knows, perhaps Murphy can be used as part of a package for a starting pitching. There are a lot of possibilities there.

Hudson and Overbay is a much better right side of the infield than Murphy and Castillo. Let’s face it we probably have seen the last productive years of Castillo’s career.

    Jeff,

Very little. Figgins is expected to get 11-12M a year over 4. Something Mets will not do.
